Here is one move which could be done and make a
difference in getting to the playoffs. Eugenio Suarez is definitely on the trading block. Amazingly, the longterm 7 or 8 year deal he signed with the Reds is on it’s last season so he will be a Free agent at the end of the year and with what he has done over the last year and a half ( from last years All star game to now, just over a full season, I think he has 5 homers).So his salry for this year is probably somewhere in the $8 to12 million range and if the Reds traded for him they would just have to play him for the last 2 months and then would lose him to FA. I thought about that when I heard the Reds were experimenting with moving Marte to RF and I was thinking why would they do something like that, they have no real answer at third to replace him. I would think one top prospect would maybe get him for the rest of the season.
Suarez is going straight back to the Mariners. But maybe you and Sackman think differently. Reds will not get Suarez.

I just have no idea why Atlanta would even entertain this. The fans would revolt. Nothing has gone right this year. It happens. Doesn’t mean you tear it all down. Not killing you, Blues, just wondering why ESPN’s version of dumbass Jim Bowden would waste words on this.

When the Reds score 3 or more runs he’s 7-1 with 5 no decisions. He isn’t going to throw any complete game shutouts but score a few runs when he’s on the mound and he will keep you in the game.
At best this is a .500 team sitting home for the post season.
Truthfully it doesn’t matter what the Reds do. Even getting Acuna wouldn’t make this a playoff team as currently constructed. This Nationals series is proving that.
I think maybe you meant nationals. They are terrible and we lost 6-1 to them last night. Win a series against a good Mets team and then get hammered against a team twenty under. That’s how we do it!
FWIW, Baseball Trade Values has Acuna at a very high 86.2, but Elly alone is 130.6 so even straight up it’s an overpay by the Reds. Sure, BTV isn’t an exact science, but it at least provides ballpark estimates… pun intended.

I have to think the Cards are coming very close to being sellers. They DFA Fedde this week, and have lost 13 of 18. Attendance is down again as well. Largely because downtown STL is a shooting gallery.
The Savannah Bananas sold out Busch like a week or two ago with no issue. Downtown STL has a lot of problems, but it’s mostly due to the DeWitts being incompetent/cheap (by Cardinals standards) and it reflecting on the field for years now.
I have lived in STL since 1987. City population is under 300K. There was a recommendation just this week to close 37 of 65 St. Louis Public Schools. St. Louis public school enrollment is down to 18,000. Projected to drop to 13,000 in the next 5 years. Major TV stations have moved to the suburbs. Just about every major law firm has moved out of the city to the suburbs. There isn’t a day that goes by where there isn’t a shooting in the city proper. Major employers in addition to law firms have fled. It used to be you couldn’t find a place to park on the streets in downtown. Now, its a ghost town. With the exception of the MVC tournament, virtually no events or conferences are now held in the city proper. I could go on. I won’t comment on the Dewitts. I am a lifetime Reds fan. So if the Cards lose that is fine by me. My window from my office on the 19th floor of a building in Clayton, MO looks at the skyline of STL, the Arch straight out from the chair I am sitting in. That is as close to downtown as I need to go.

The Dewitt’s have owned the Cardinals since 1995, and in 30 years they’ve been to the playoffs 15 times, gone to 4 World Series, and won 2 World Championships. In the past 25 seasons they have only 2 where they finished with a below .500 record. Their payroll has consistently been well above other metro areas of similar size.
I’d hardly call them incompetent/cheap. Yeah, the team has struggled the past couple of seasons and their outlook isn’t great…welcome to the party of a non-major-market team. You’d think the BEST FANS IN BASEBALL would continue to support them.
I was in St Louis in 1987 for the large national PRSA conference. It was my first time there and I was impressed. We stayed at a nice hotel near LeCledes Landing and shuttled out to Union Station for conference activities. The city was vibrant! Evening options included a history of jazz concert and a riverboat cruise. The Mayor of East St Louis, Illinois - from a funeral home operating family - made his limos available to us one night for a disco party he hosted at a club on the Main Street of his city. Union Station was apparently in its prime. We had a wonderful time there. The conference took place during the Giants vs Cards playoff series. The Cards won in 7 games while we were there and there were big non-violent celebrations near our hotel that night. SF’s Jeffrey Leonard (Flaps up/Flaps down) was series MVP. I got to know Hack very well when he was traded to the Mariners later.
I was back in St Louis in 2019 for my honey’s National Government Finance Officers Conference. St Louis had changed drastically!
We took the light rail into the Union Station area to her hotel mid-day on a Sunday. The elevator at the station was broken so we had to drag our luggage up four sets of stairs. We were all alone there. At the top of the stairs was a very menacing looking man glaring at me as I followed Melanie up the stairs. He started moving towards me as she passed him, believing I was alone. When Melanie stopped and said something to me, he paused, looked frustrated and scurried off. I am absolutely certain I was about to have been mugged and pushed down the stairs. It was as afraid as I’ve ever been while traveling.
We checked in and went over to Union Station. It was a shell of its former glory years. Most everything was closed or completely out of business. They were in process of building a new aquarium there, I believe. But the area was largely deserted.
People at the hotel warned us about going downtown at night so we took a cab to the Arch that afternoon and took the tour. That evening we cabbed out to near Washington University St Louis and took a Salsa lesson. That seemed safe.
The sole conference event was a tour of the Budweiser Brewery. It was great!
The Cards had a day game that I attended in the new stadium. I felt safe for that. But Downtown seemed quite empty compared to the vibrancy I’d experienced 32 years previously.

Sounds like St. Louis is going through what Detroit did 20 or 30 years ago. Inner city got old and everybody moved to the suburbs. They took all the money with them. A ton of old empty buildings and no money in the city to fix things and knock down old things and no jobs for those left living there. Detroit metro still had a ton of money and population and when they started spending it to fix the inner city and invest in downtown areas things have picked up . St. Louis sounds like they need to do the same thing. The suburban areas seem to have all kinds of nice new building and businesses.
Back to the Reds. Here are the current standings of all the teams over .500 who are fighting for 3 divisional championships and 3 wildcard spots. Leaders in each division Brewers +20, Dodgers +17, Mets +15. Here are the three current Wild card leaders: Cubs +18, Phillies +14, Padres +8. Here are the other teams at >500 or better: Giants +5, Reds +3, Cardinals +1. Reds are currently 2.5 games behind the last Wild Card spot. 2 months to go. Right now they would have to jump the Giants and Padres to get the 3rd Wildcard.
The elder DeWitt is still the principle owner and was a strong owner, but he’s 83 and his son has a lot more operational power now. We’re pacing to the worst three-year record of Cardinal baseball since 97-99, if we finish 78-86 or worse it’ll be the worst stretch since 54-56. Meh baseball owners are nothing new and there are definitely worse out there, but crushing mediocrity is something that the Cardinals fan base doesn’t stand for.
I hated the Reds in the early 2010s with the whole Brandon Phillips era. This group is a lot more likable for me at least, would rather see them do well in the NL Central than the Cubs.
St. Louis has been run by incompetent mayors and incompetent board of alderman for years and they have run the city into the ground. For the last several years, people in the City have been suggesting (begging) that the City and St. Louis County merge. As a resident of St. Louis County both for my office and my home, thanks but no thanks.
Nescadad-there is not one hotel left open on Laclede’s Landing. Not one. And most of the restaurants and bars are shuttered as well. Used to be a vibrant area of town, and I am not talking about that long ago. Not it is a run down abandoned ghost area. And the advice you got to not walk around at night was good advice. I could go on but as Dick said, back to the Reds.
