The Reds

I said pre season we would likely be .500 again and as of May 7th, we are. I like the new manager but no movement of real note this off season and a .500 style. Like we’ve been before April/May so there’s that. I hope I’m wrong!

I believe the old adage is you can’t win the World Series in April but you can lose it. Being around .500 or better is the key to that so unlike some previous seasons they haven’t lost it yet!

While they had no big off season splashes so far the aquisitions they have made have performed well. Trevino, Lux, Hays, Singer and Rogers have all done well. Martinez and Pagan were the major re-signs and they are both doing well. The only miss so far has been Barlow.
The rotation has been fantastic and has even more depth in the minors and coming back from injury. Hopefully the Hunter Greene injury last night is nothing major. Bullpen has been meh, blown a few games as they sort through who can be counted on and who can’t. Sad to see Diaz not able to return to his 22-23 form.
The young guys they are counting on have to step up eventually. Steer, McLain and Elly are the young core of the lineup and need to produce more. Marte’s return to his rookie form has been great to see.

You have more optimism about them than I do, but I’d love to be wrong here so let’s check back in come June.

I think McLain and Steer are the keys. They have both shown high level ability in the past but are really struggling to get back to that level. The other parts of the team are good enough but we need the potential stars to step up.

I just hope we can reach terminal velocity to escape another 70 something win season. There is just 15 games difference between mediocre (75 wins) and a great team (90 wins) but for whatever reason, those 15 games are hard to win.

The TV broadcast was talking about how Steer really didn’t have any leadup into spring training and then a limited amout of work in spring so he’s really behind and possibly just starting to catch up. Shoulder injuries always worry me the most (remember Austin Kearns) and I really hope McLain is not a repeat.

Hunter Green on 15 day DL. Here we go.
He’s been poorly handled by the Reds.Sad to see.

I have some concerns as well.

Reds traded AA reliever Andrew Moore to the padres for utility man Connor Joe

How so?

Now they can add him to all the other guys named Joe.

2X Hawk,
Hunter Green blew up his arm lighting up the scoreboard 100+ MPH speed in A ball. This should not have happened. Had Tommy John surgery. We were at the game and predicted he’d blown up his arm. The team said he left the game due to having eaten bad chicken wings at lunch.
He’s been on the DL each of his first 3 seasons in MLB.and is currently on 15 day IR.

They need to develop him to pitch not to rely on only throwing heat.

He strikes me as a guy who up to recently only trained as hard as he needed to get by. Some of his past injuries seem to be fatigue related and he had the incidents of throwing up during very hot games last year. He reportedly implemented a new training program in the off-season to improve in that area. Maybe he also susceptible to dehydration?

The story of this year‘s Reds is not the moves they made this past offseason, which for the most part have been very good, but rather did they do enough?

Singer, Trevino, Lux, Hays….all good additions.

But, ownership/front office left Francona with gaping holes at 1B, 3B, RF and closer. Not to mention lack of organizational depth when injuries occur. Part of it is ownership not investing in the roster and part of it is the front office swinging and missing when they have spent money (Candelario).

What you just described is the blueprint for staying within the gravitational force field of suck. The Reds will not escape it without spending. 78 wins. I’m calling my shot now.
