Stadiums...facilities

Noble Beast’s Hefeweizen is great.

If you have not been to CLAG (Crazy Little Asian Guy) in Sandusky you really should. Best brewery food ever (Chinese) and really good beer.

I would say halftime of the OU game Saturday would be a great time for the announcement.

Probably. But maybe let’s expand the damn palate. And I’d hope MU students are more worldly.

Phillips wasn’t on the original list so I don’t think that will be a finalist.

What are guesses from the Board as to what those two finalist locations will be?

I am leaning towards Cook Field ending up the final choice since it’s open and an easier build, plus just assuming that if the major donor wanted the Arena to be near Slant Walk on High Street ( and there was apparently too much opposition to that choice), then Cook is the closest option to that. It’s at a prominent spot, and is pretty accessible to most students.

The negative is the loss of green space, but according to what we have seen there is a plan to partially rectify that situation w adjacent land to the south.

I believe it will be Cook as well.

Like you said easiest to build on, little to no additional demolition expense and the recreation fields could easily be replaced on the Millett site.

Just so we all get “The Miami Home Cook Inn.”

What building was that, Eddie?

See Page 4 under “communicate”…It was a “communication building.”

Cook Field is easily the best location (IMHO). Great access from the south, east and north. Easy ingress and egress with space for parking. Close(er) to all quads. Limit the High Street/Talawanda traffic congestion pre and post game. Space available for an up scale hotel. Maybe even a bistro.
Green space? As water always finds its own level, students will find additional space to play on. And yes, there is additional space. May require a short walk–G-d forbid! Is Millett going to be demolished or used for vball, grad, concerts, etc? It won’t be available for use if it requires $80M+ to update. If demolished–green space! Tear out the sidewalks going to Millett and more space. Make it a dedicated intramural/student use space.
Question–when has Cook ever been overflowing with student intramurals? My guess is very seldom. Even with construction, there would be space for student use. And when has a major building project been denied to allow for the occasional fball/frisbee/lacrosse, etc use by students during the fall and spring? How much use in the dead of winter (bball season)? Also, I don’t recall this discussion with any other building project, including Goggin.
A new arena, hotel, bistro would be a great entrance to campus. A “Wow!” when one reaches the top of the hill. This is a project projected to be used for several/many decades.
I am sure students will survive if Cook is the site!

It will go where the JohnnyMac plan says it will go.

I was told by a friend of mine who went hiking with a MU janitor on the condition of secrecy that they were moving a barge onto 8 mile to start dredging. Can that mean the floating casino/arena is actually…happening?

Cook Field prominent location would obviously give Miami a great opportunity to showcase the Arena, and I would expect a lot of emphasis would presumably go into the architectural design. I would expect a combination of red brick and a lot of glass. Maybe something somewhat similar to the Schar Arena at Elon.

The previously mentioned use of the Millet demolish area to construct new intramural practice fields is a great idea. Take out all this sidewalks and just that area in front of the current building is a lot of space. In fact, the front lawns of Millet is where we used to practice for intramurals football and softball. It was also the scene of a 2 player collision I had while practicing softball…got knocked out cold and woke up at the Oxford Hospital.

I was a diehard hoops and football fan while a student, and never missed a home game at Millet…but I gotta admit that was one long, cold walk from my South quad dorm…Cook Field area is about as centrally located as you can get.

A Miami-themed Graduate Hotel would be perfect in that location!

Cook was overflowing with intramurals in the late 1980s when I was playing and officiating for rec sports. Not sure how crowded now - but jam packed solid back then. And did not have lights yet.

I was there from '69-'73. The only intramural that I recall seeing there was rugby. Broken arms and all. I never set foot on Cook Field for 4 years. I played racket ball, hand ball and basketball at Withrow. However, I don’t question your recollection of the use of Cook.
However, it becomes a matter of priorities and alternate sites to mitigate the loss of Cook. We’re talking about a $50M++ building to replace a facility that can not be remodeled to bring it up to standards required to make it a real bball/vball/multiuse facility. Would the new facility be of benefit to students? I hope so.
So if not Cook, do we want it on the central campus? I don’t like that idea much. Too many negatives, ie parking, ingress/egress, dare I say green space. Cook is a luxury for intramurals. What percentage of students use Cook for intramurals–15%? 20%? 25%? Catering to a relatively small number of students when alternate sites are/could be available, to block a major improvement to the campus/Oxford seems to be a price too high to pay.
