Not saying yea or nay on Cook Field for the arena. Just commenting it was heavily used when I was there. The area across from the Equestrian stables on SR 73 was also was used a fair amount. Now a parking lot. As was old Withrow. They found spaces to move intramurals when those locales were taken out of service. I’m confident they will find space to have intramurals going forward.
Our student use of the facilities is much lower than it should/would be if we can win some games! And don’t forget about the students that use the facilities to participate in our athletic teams. And the facility would be used for more than just the athletic teams, as has been the case with Millett. And I agree that intramurals are an “important part of a well-rounded university experience”. But I and others are not saying that intramurals have no place on our campus. It is not an either/or situation. . It is a plan to improve the facilities and replace an aging, inadequate Millett Hall while other sites either exist or could be developed.
ive stayed at the Graduates before…UVa, USC and UGA… the first two were very nice, UGA was off brand and has since closed.
it would be a perfect match for Oxford.
Based on comments here from grads of different eras, it certainly looks like the use of Cook Field went up over time. In my years in Oxford (74-78), Cook was mostly unused. (I only recall Archery set up there ). I played all kinds of intramurals and never once used Cook. Obviously that changed soon thereafter.
I personally don’t have an issue with placing the Arena there and making green space available elsewhere to compensate. It would certainly seem that designing the area near Millet to accommodate intramural practice and/or games would be a good idea. Still a long trek from South Quad but it wouldn’t be in the winter. We had intramural football games out State route 73 down the hill…
Now we’re COOK ing…it is the best location for all constituencies. And it’ll show visitors to Miami’s campus that we don’t have to hide down a hill in the dark of night.
It was ditmer next to the stables right? We played soccer there. I think we did ultimate frisbee on cook
I think the disc golf course is now just south of the Art Museum.
Ladies club soccer plays at Cook.We have a neighbor on the team.
Scheduling not an issue at 12 noon on Sunday.
Any green space remaining will depend on how they do parking (above ground, underground,.or rely on the parking over near the baseball field), and the hotel (or not). If the hotel is not attached and the parking is underground, there could be some green space left for a soccer field or two. (perhaps).
I’ve stayed at the Cornell Graduate on Roosevelt Island in NYC. They are great hotels. This would be an awesome chain boutique hotel for Miami to have on campus.
I stayed at the one at the corner of the Minnesota campus when I went up for that game. It was great…easy walk to the stadium. I think the brand might have been bought out by Hilton recently.
I just stayed at The Graduate at U of A in Tucson for the AZ Bowl…agree with comments above.
Disc golf wound through Western back in the day and still does, Ultimate frisbee is more like rugby/football with frisbee.
Ah yes, for those Air Force folks, nothing like ultimate frisbee at SOS.
I did it by correspondence so never had the pleasure. Oh, and don’t forget flickerball!
Wow! I am learning about new sports activities here on the Board today! I knew about disc golf frisbee, but the rest is all new to me!
Two sites chosen for consideration are Cook Field and Corner of Oak & Spring (Southwest Quad).
Cook Field site: The potential site would be located adjacent to the proposed hotel and restaurant near the Farmer School of Business, Bachelor Hall, and Shideler Hall. Pulley Tower would remain, but the intramural fields would be permanently relocated to another location on campus that would be convenient for students. A master plan would be developed for the entire Cook Field site that would provide for future projects, such as a conference center being integrated into the overall site in the future.
Southwest Quad site: The potential site would be located near Goggin, the Recreational Sports Center, and the Campus Avenue Garage, and sit along Spring Street and the corner of Oak Street. Following previously designed campus plans, space will be created as Williams Hall, Wells Hall, and Joyner House are taken down, as planned. Bonham House would also be taken down if this site were selected. Programs in Williams Hall will be moved to the renovated Bachelor Hall. Bonham House is currently home to the Myaamia Center, which would be relocated to another location on campus. We will work closely with the Myaamia Center to ensure they have adequate space to support their important research and programming.
Now, before I comment on this, I want to make sure I’m reading this right: are these in fact the “official” final two sites.
Please verify!
