Reds 2026

Hayes batting is a joke. Not sure I have seen some worse EVER.

Probably could not hit elementary school pitchers. He has to be embarrassed.

Nice comeback losing 3-1 going into the 9th. Hinds comes through w big double in the 10th to seal the deal. Hayes 0-2 before Reds pinch hit for him.

Something incredible and hilarious about the Mets being in an 11 game losing streak when the season is only 22 games old

I don’t care how bad Hayes hits, I’ll gladly put his plus defense in the field every day. You can’t have even an average defensive 3rd baseman on the left side with EDLC.

I’m not an advanced metrics guy so I won’t take issue w those of you that say an elite glove at third overrides a guy who can’t hit a ā€œlickā€.

But I would be interested in how these metrics work out with an average fielding third baseman who hits 20-25 homers, bats .250, and knocks in 80+ runs compares.

For a full year’s comparison’s, you could plug in an expectation that Hayes begins to hit in line w his recent couple of years for the rest of the season.

He’s currently 3-52 w no homers and no extra base hits and no RBI’s. If he has 300 more official plate appearances the rest of the year and hits .235 from now on (more in line w his recent performance prior to 2026 ), he would amass a total of 73 hits and finish the year with a .207 BA. Throw in 5 homers and 35 RBI’s.

If average is the .058 Bryan is hitting, MLB is in serious trouble!!

Since you said you aren’t a saber guy, I will give a quick intro to WAR before I explain further. First off, the assumption is that even a group of AAA players would win 48 games a year. So that is the baseline, aka the replacement level of pulling a random player out of AAA. Every WAR above that should theoretically add 1 win to your team’s total. 1 win is considered to be 10 runs of run differential, either runs prevented on defense, or runs added on offense. So metrics are trying to assign run value to players, but they take different routes to get there. This sometimes leads to differences in results based on the assumptions taken. This is especially true with players whose main value comes from defense, because it’s hard to decide how much more difficult each position is, how many more outs one player would have compared to another. So defensive value is a bit subjective.

With all that said, the main WAR compiler has Hayes’s value at -0.3 WAR, which would extrapolate out to about -2 WAR full season, aka 2 games worse than a random AAA player. Basically every team with a player at that trajectory would be trying to replace said player. The Reds’ pitching is overperforming at the moment. How much is that attributable to Hayes? He saves pitches, innings, and arms for later in the season. That is not included in the value assigned to him, and I do think that has value to a team. I personally would stick with him for at least another month and hope he returns to being a .250 hitter, as that’s all that’s needed to make him have positive value.

Thanks for the primer, Rok!

All along I would totally agree that if Hayes can hit .250, all things considered he’d be a positive to the team w his glove. Even .240 perhaps.

The other part of this complex equation is that by putting Suarez at third, you could then insert your best choice of a hitter for the DH role that Suarez sometimes fills. Again, at this juncture I don’t see any other hitters that are hitting all that well..if Hinds starts hitting w some power that could change the metrics.

Here is a suggestion, not knowing his callup status etc. I have raised this name before as a 3B option. Click on his current stats at AAA Louisville:

=>Sal MFing Stewart.

Reds win again 6-1 behind Stewart homer and double.

Hayes broken his major league leading 33 AB no hit streak with a single in the 6th. He went 1-4. Reds tend to leave him in the game for his D when we are ahead, and pull him for pinch hitter in later innings when we need more runs.

My man Hayes just went yard!

Oppo yard even!

1st homer, 1st extra base hit, and first RBI all w one swing of the bat! And Reds lead 5-0 in the 5th!

=>Can the Reds just waive all home games and play on the road?

=>Sam moll.

Just love that name.
