Monitoring the Miami Transfer Portal

NESCACDAD has me nailed dead center. Going down to about 10 degrees tonight here in C/Bus and I’ve abandoned The Boss and Glory Days for a Jimmy B classic (I Need a) “Holiday,” The weather Channel girl and her perfect little curl is talking cold, cold, cold. You can’t get out of bed you can’t remember what you said you’re feeling old, old, old." Check it out on Spotify all you young’uns. Beats the shit out of pop rock today (the older gentleman said).Last but not least if this forum has any kind of impact Lord help us all. MHT is just a very few concerned citizens having fun and sharing some baloney.
We’re all friends here . Love + Honor to all!

Andy, We have had 3 consecutive winning seasons, and a MAC championship in the last 3 years. We have not accomplished those things since Terry Hoepner left almost 20 years ago. Every other major sport at Miami is failing. Hockey seems to get worse every year and is actually becoming an embarrassment ( 9-1 and 8-0 losses in the same weekend). Since Charlie Coles left basketball has had 1 winning season ( 12-11). Our current women’s coach has finished in last place 2 years in a row and might make it three. Our football coach has slowly and steadily improved a program from the worst in Division 1 when he took over. I think you are simply wrong in the things you are saying about him. Basically all the constant complaints from my fellow oldtimers gets tiring and accomplishes nothing positive. Go after the basketball coaches or the hockey coach, they are failing whereas Chuck Martin has improved our program a great deal. How much further can he take it? I don’t know. I do remember Bo and Bill Mallory going 7-3 for about 5 years in a row, and then suddenly we hit a new level and only lost 1 game in 3 years and played 7 power conference teams in that span.

Compared to all the other major Miami sports, he is our star coach. It would be nice if Miami athletics were what they were in the past, but it would take a huge infusion of money to compete at that level again. Of all the coaches in our major sports, he is the best and the most successful.

Well said!

True but depressing. To think that our slowly improving football program hovering around .500 is now the hallmark program of Miami men’s athletics is a startling reality. I agree that CM has done the best job of any of our major, revenue-generating program coaches. He inherited a hot mess and has finally gotten us back above .500 with a bowl win against a traditional bottom feeding G5 team. His team’s effort against Mississippi State in 2016, Army in 2018 and Minnesota in 2021 were commendable. The team’s efforts against Ohio, EMU and Kent in 2021 were not.

As I have stated elsewhere, this next season will be a significant one in terms of providing evidence that we can once again be a relevant G5 program. By any measure, we presently are not one.

I don’t think anyone is expecting us to be a top 10 FBS team again anytime soon, if ever again. Those years were aberrations and the football landscape has changed dramatically since 2003. But if we can’t get ourselves back into the top 25 of the G5 on a consistent basis, we are not hitting the mark.

I think it’s women’s field hockey. That has now been ranked the last 3 years and won at the highest level. Football trending in the right direction but not at that level of sustained success yet.

Softball had an exceptional season last spring.

…and I would think our beautiful softball stadium would be helpful in recruiting.

And our new head softball coach has been magnificent. She has loaded up with talent and is playing what is basically a P5/MAC schedule - and has the women holding their own. Success breeds success, self-confidence and lofty expectations. And a glittery schedule attracts talent.

Absolutely.

Jive, I don’t personally agree with your assessment but I’m darn grateful you’ve made this forum as it’s a lot of fun to hear and learn from everyone. Attention is hard to capture. Engagement is fleeting. Yet you’ve done it by building it here.

Any portal updates?

Supposedly have one more announcement coming. Big Ben retiring kinda dominated social media yesterday, so maybe we’ll hear something today.

The miami release mentioned the 6th guy which was the o lineman Brekke that we already knew about

Please don’t think I’m not cheering for Martin. I would love to put him in the same category as Ara, Bo, Bill, Pont; however it just seems to get further away each year. As you know, I’ve been to every home game since 1954 as well as a ton of road games. There was a time when I honestly believed we were going to win every damn game. That waned in the Tim Rose era. Randy and Terry brought that back. Since then, ZILCH!!! As I mentioned in the past, Chuck seems fixed on winning the MAC and going to a bowl. I want something better: victories over Indiana, Northwestern, Purdue, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Virginia Tech, and of course, Cincinnati. Although Chuck seems to recruit well, he has the propensity to blow games (UC, BG, Miss St. etc).
Why have we fallen so far in both football and basketball? Charlie Coles played tough preseason schedules and managed to have winning seasons. Jack Owens has patsies and still has a tough time getting over 500. He obviously cannot recruit enough good players to win. Chuck recruits well but after 8 seasons, his overall record is terrible. One FBS win outside the MAC (North Texas). I don’t understand how he was so successful at Grand Valley State and a seeming failure at a school well known for its success in football. It should not take 8 years to rebuild a program. Other MAC coaches have been successful…why not Chuck???

Andy, I had no idea you’d been to every home game since 1954! Amazing!

I’ll give that credit to Steve. Steve put a lot of time, money, and effort into building MHT. I don’t agree with the way the old site ended, but I do think he cared deeply for Miami athletics. Now I’m just hoping to provide a place for Miami fans to continue those discussions.

Steve is one talented guy. I’ve often said he could say just about anything on mic and it would sound good. Upkeep and management of a digital community is hard work so don’t sell yourself short.

Aha. Well whoever he is, if he helped facilitate the creation of this then he’s alright in my book.

Every home game since 1954! WOW. I don’t count Chuck’s 1st 2 years since the roster he inherited was so weak.

2019 he coached a MAC Championship and 2021 the first bowl win in a decade.

No excuse for the OU loss. EMU loss had starting QB out. At KENT should have won
