I think 2022 will be an interesting test to see if we can maintain any kind of momentum sparked by the first OOC FBS/bowl game win and our first season in the transfer portal era. It’s a brave new world, whether we see that as completely positive or not. I would dearly love to see another era that people like 2016 would want to talk about 25 years from now. Miami fans from the 2010-2020 era really don’t have any good old days that they can look back on fondly. And that’s sad.
If continually moping about the old days had any benefit to Miami’s situation today, it’d be one thing; or even if the sports were anything like they were 20,30, 40 years ago.
I don’t think anyone is “moping about the old days.” They might be moping about the current state of affairs in Miami sports - pretty much across the board on the big 3 men’s side, although we did see a slight uptick in football this past season. .
This.
Miami is apparently adding one more mid-semester transfer. Stay tuned…
Ricky Stanzi?
Seriously. It’s honestly embarrassing at a certain point. It’s a collection of people that sound like Tennessee or Texas fans. The program can’t move forward because every move it makes is inspected under the lens of, “is this what we would’ve done back in the day?” And it isn’t and shouldn’t be. The former-athlete alums are happy with the decisions. The donors are happy. But this board is full of people like this:
We “old men” long for the days when 6-6 in football and being in a manufactured bowl wasn’t acceptable. Not by the administration and not by the coaches and players. You whippersnappers are too comfortable with mediocrity, probably because it’s all you’ve known.
Well said, Grumpy! And precisely why wouldn’t we want to sound like Tennessee or Texas fans? Those fans are unhappy with their programs devolving into mediocrity. Implying we old men shouldn’t be unhappy with a similar devolution of the once proud Miami program is the thing that’s truly embarrassing.
Don’t think anyone is happy with 7-6 , Just a lot better than the recent 0-12, 2-10, and 3-9 seasons.
I agree. The kids who are starting and then enter the Portal, particularly at QB are playing musical chairs and creating a mercenary environment. A kid recruited out of HS comes with the intention of redshirting and then maybe getting an opportunity to compete by his RS freshmen or sophomore year. Now teams are taking a portal transfer any time the starter is done and the HS recruits, in most instances, still don’t get reps. Hence, they look to the Portal and it creates a vicious cycle.
Overall, I’m in favor of the kid being able to transfer easier, but I think there needs to be a return to some limited restrictions. If you have started more than 4 games during the year or started say 3 of last 5 games ( just brainstorming), then you can enter Portal but have to give up one year of eligibility or even a half year (could only participate in 6 games). It won’t happen but CFB (at the G5 level and below) is being irreparably damaged if this revolving door isn’t slowed down.
This is more than a bit dramatic. The momentum of the program is not impacted by what ~40 people say on a message board.
Because you’re so busy thinking about 50 years ago that you can’t see the current landscape or provide any value to help the program in the current landscape. “50 years ago we would’ve done XYZ!” Nobody cares because XYZ doesn’t work today.
If you truly think that, I’d say you really think incoming student athletes are stupid. There’s a reason staffs now have dedicated propaganda people on staff.
Ok. So what exactly works today? Because whatever you’re preaching as today’s new age recipe for success isn’t working. You seem to like to slam older guys who witnessed success at Miami for seeking significant improvement but you don’t offer many answers. How do we get to 10-2 occasionally or at least 8-4 consistently in football? How do we get back to even the top half in hockey? How do we even consistently get back to winning more games than we lose in hoops? These aren’t lofty goals, are they? If it’s a consensus among recent grads that they are too challenging, I’ll disengage from caring.
I think that’s what makes this so interesting/infuriating. These rules weren’t designed for us little guys but how we navigate these waters in our dinghy still matters. Everyone is trying to figure this out. We’re replacing good MAC players with hopefully good players. We’ll see. Coaching and development has never been more important (Oh God we’re hosed).
Seriously?
I’m not the one who thinks incoming student-athletes are stupid, it’s the people trying to fool them with a shiny Instagram account.
Jive and all…it’s just all us old farts just sitting around singing our favorite Bruce Springsteen song “Glory Days.”
For all you youngsters out there that would be “classic rock.” Give it a listen on Spotify. Maybe your dad has an old Bruce album laying around. You know- those usually black round and flat things.
I mean what the hell? Are we supposed to revel in the 2010+ era when we lived (and maybe even played) back in the Glory Days?
Think like NESCACDAD said, when we get to a consistent 8-4—9-2 and every now and then 10-2 all us old farts will stop talking about the good ole’ days.
As to the portal I think in a couple years (about four months in Millenial/Gen X time) things might settle when a number of guys moving up for greener P5 pastures wind up ridding the pine. If/when it that happens and it becomes a common theme things might slow down from where they are today.
In the meantime being a coach can really suck. Georgia has a 5 star wide recriver transfer to Alabama to play with a Heisman QB. Alabama loses eight or nine players, all of them 4 stars or more. Just saw today they had another 5 star running back head to the portal. WTF?
So what do you do? Looks like we’re keeping our eye on the portal and not stuck in the sand. Credit them for that. Past that good luck to coach and his staff because it looks like turning a 3 star linebacker or defensive end into an All MAC performer doesn’t look like it’s going to be good enough to keep them.
Some of us are listening to Buffett and for those of us with a bit of experience in Canadian hockey affairs, the Guess Who. I rock Bryan Adams, too. Maybe they’ve at least heard of him.
That’s right. That’s only about half the number of season ticket holders.
