I had a single ticket I bought outside that was in the middle of a bunch of old OSU season ticket holders. When the game remained close late, I turned to the old guy next to me and said it shouldn’t be another 90 years before these teams play again. He looked at me and said “if Miami wins it will be another 90 years before they play again.”
Our seats were in the South end zone, probably 120 yds from the play; Bath never stepped out of bounds.
That was an incredible day. Ohio State wasnt as good as now and I remember thinking we had a chance to win most of the game
Even the late touchdown should have been a late FG because we jumped up offside on the FG attempt and they took the penalty and scored a TD
There were so many people at the Miami pregame event
It was such a unique experience
I lived in Seattle then. I had back to back national meetings in the DC/Baltimore area so I drove over Friday night for the game and drove back afterwards. Quite a trip but worth it.
Mike Bath suffered a back injury which bothered him off and on the rest of the year, because of that injury, he was not as good the rest of the year. You might recall that right before we played OSU, Bath led us to two TD’s in the last 2 minutes to give us a come from behind win at Vanderbilt. Before that injury, he was good enough to start ahead of a true freshman version of Big Ben. We had gone 10-1 the previous season with Bath at QB.
That injury occurred on a vicious hit on a false start play where the Refs blew the whistle and everybody stopped but the OSU DE who blew up Bath. Dumb ass refs did not even penalize him and Coach Hepner went crazy on the sidelines.
That’s the play I was trying to remember…I knew Bath got hit with a cheap shot without a penalty called, but couldn’t remember the particulars.
Only took about 95 posts or so before this thread joined the rest of talking about the good ole days. Not bad. Anyways, some quick scattered thoughts about the portal…
-
Good for Pace going to play with his brother and a program that just made the CFP. I wish they weren’t our rival but whatever.
-
Other than Kansas, have there been any other offers for Phelps? Just because a guy hits the portal doesn’t mean he’s definitely leaving. Maybe if the interest isn’t where he thought it was, he comes back.

I have zero issues with guys developing, improving and then transferring to better programs. It sucks, yes, of course. But if I’m going to cheer for you and hope you do well for my University, I certainly won’t hold it against you if you get so good that you go play at Penn State or the like. I think showing guys who develop into P5 players is a recruiting positive. “You might not have B1G offers now but come play for us for a few years and we’ll turn you into a player that can play there”.
-
AJ Mayer absolutely is an FBS starting QB. If Brett was gone, I’d be happy with him as our QB. He can definitely play and I hope he moves to a situation where he can win a starting job.
-
Seems like the incoming receivers we got are big dudes. Be nice to have a guy out wide that can win a jump ball if need be.
I hope to god we never say to a recruit we will build you up so good you can transfer to a P5 school.
We shouldnt be asking Miami students to fund athletics so those people they are funding have aspirations to join a power 5 school
Yes, they do their research before they transfer. Guess what? They also do their research before they commit to their original school. 85 guys think they are going to be 3 or 4 year starters when they sign their letter of intent. I am sure the coaches encourage every one of them they have the talent and ability to start ( and star) at Miami.
The majority of those in the transfer portal overall from all schools are there because it did not work out the way they thought it would.
I am for those who can better themselves. Joe Burrow is a perfect example of a guy who was stuck on a roster and needed an opportunity. If he would have stayed at OSU who knows what he would be doing this weekend. It would not be playing in the AFC championship game. He needed the reps.
I hope the guys who think they can move up succeed. However, I am not sure they have properly calculated the risk/reward benefit in most cases.
For guys like Mayer who might get a chance to start somewhere else, be it FCS or elsewhere, more power to him. I do know this. There is no benefit to going to another school to back up someone else. He better know that he is a lead pipe cinch to start wherever he goes. There are not that many situations where that is true with the talent spread around as it is.
Lax, depends on what the kid’s ambitions are. For me, the chance to be on a team was enough. For kids who think they are playing at the next level, it may not be. Never one size fits all.
A lot of talk about young men entering the transfer portal. Has anyone given the thought that an 8 year coach has only had 3 winning seasons? Perhaps these players see no upward future for Miami. The former class of the MAC, Miami has been in a funk for over 11 years and I’m not sure any alum sees a bright future. When one sees the success of former coaches (Ara, Pont, Bo, Mallory, Crum, Walker, and Hoepner) and the misery that has followed, why should we think anything different will happen? Chuck seems content to be competitive in the MAC. I can assure you those aforementioned coaches believed in winning “Big” games and they did. Miami’s coaches were never highly paid and their assistants were barely getting by. But they were damn good coaches and understood the game and were able to get their teams to play at a high level. Those coaches did not make dumb game losing decisions. Their players were confident that they could win any game they played. Those coaches breathed, lived, and coached with extreme optimism and the players bought into it. I just don’t see that today and maybe the players don’t either… hence the transfer portal.
Was that the same play where a Miami player could have thrown a block and Bath would have walked in? I was screaming at the tv. All the guy had to do was stand in the way!
Oh they didn’t blow the call, they made the exact call they wanted to.
We won a MAC championship in 2019, a bowl game in 2021, and have the #1 ranked recruiting class arriving in the fall. Things really aren’t as bleak as some here make it out to be. But please, tell us more about the old days.
Sorry if it’s boring you, 2016. But almost beating Ohio State in 2000 at the Shoe was a pretty big deal, and many of us were on hand to see it. I don’t really consider 2000 to be ancient history, but I will grant you that all depends on your age and experience.
Yes…Things aren’t as bleak as it may appear. But many folks here would like to hear more about the old days…Not less. Culture. Dedication. Wins.
I’m not talking about the 2000 game (although this thread is supposed to be about the transfer portal). My post was in response to Andystef who thinks our players are leaving the program because they think it’s not going anywhere. I disagree. Also just the general tone some posters have that everything was great back in the day and that everything is terrible now. Again, I disagree and mentioned a few points why things really aren’t that bad right now. As JCook alluded to earlier, it doesn’t take long for threads on here to devolve into talking about old Miami teams (as this one has). As a younger fan who enjoys talking about the current team, it just kinda gets…well…old sometimes (no pun intended).
Also, I fully appreciate Miami’s football history. My dad played at Miami back in the 60’s under Bo. It’s the reason I’ve spent all 35 years of my life as a Miami fan. I have nothing but respect for Miami’s football history, I just sometimes feels like this fan base is stuck there.
I wish I could have been at Miami in the 70s. It would have been a great time to watch unprecedented history. Of course, every decade has some merit and hopefully we will get more moments to remember.
I wont argue with the premise of your argument too much because on some level, you’re correct. But on the other hand, if you’re a coach that truly cares about his players and wants what’s best for them, shouldn’t coach help them get to where they want to go? And if you get a reputation for being able to develop players to meet and exceed their potential, won’t that be pretty attractive to future recruits? And who knows, some of them may look around and decide they like it enough to stay a few more years.
We fund plenty of coaches who have aspirations for a P5 job. Granted, right now not many of them are good enough to get a P5 job, but they aspire…what’s the difference?
Happy to talk about this year’s team when warranted…had another rather disappointing season but loved the bowl win and said so in other threads …hopefully will keep it up next season.
