FCS championship caliber quarterbacks are lightyears better than him. I don’t know about D2.
It’s obvious that QB is the most volatile position as far as the portal goes. As I mentioned earlier, there are currently 43 FBS QB in the portal looking for jobs as a starter. Another 96 portal QB have already been placed - and 32 of them opted for non-FBS programs.
Of note is that Camden Orth, the LIU QB we faced last fall, has transferred up to BG. CM mentioned him as an FBS quality QB after we played them.
Like the three or four NFL QB that recently came out of ND State, perhaps.
A.J. Is an perfect reason to support the portal- a good player stuck behind a better player in the same grade/eligibility
The ones that make it hard for me as a fan are the people that got all the opportunities that we could provide and it still wasnt good enough
No hard feelings towards AJ. Wishing him only the best. He stuck it out, got his degree and hopefully he’ll get a shot at one more year of meaningful playing time somewhere. I agree with you that it’s hard to swallow the fact that we’re going to give a few talented kids the opportunity to get better, we’re going to coach them up and invest in their development, and then they’re going to go shopping for greener pastures just as the get to the point of helping us become a very special team. We’ve always been a stepping stone for coaches - but they usually move on after they’ve done something to create that special season or two for our program. Players leaving just because THEY’VE personally had that one good season is harder to swallow. It’s obviously the way things are nowadays but I’m not sure I really like not being a destination program.
Perhaps, though there’s no way that players aren’t transferring upward (whether FCS to G5 programs or G5 to P5) without doing their research. If you look at the depth chart and don’t see much returning talent at your position then there’s a much better chance you play, not to mention that I’m sure these transfers talk to the coaching staff and get a realistic assessment on how they fit into their program. No program wants a reputation as a transfer graveyard in this new world.
Best of luck to Meyer, he was definitely the best backup QB we’ve had since I’ve been a Miami fan. I think he could be a serviceable starter at a decent FCS school, the fact he has actual game experience is a big edge he has over other QBs in the transfer portal (many of whom are probably underclassmen buried in the depth chart or guys who didn’t want to stick around for a coaching change). We need to make sure that our new backup is up to snuff because with Brett’s injury history we need someone we can run an offense with, not Jackson Williamson.
That poor kid’s highlight film will always be the sacks he took at Ohio State when he was pressed into service as an I’ll-prepared backup QB. He probably should have gone to one of his nearby FCS programs like Wofford, Davidson, Gardner-Webb or Furman. After his stint with us he couldn’t break through at D2 Newberry. I bet he’ll always regret being recruited by Miami.
Just curious as I am too lazy to look It up and figure some posters here know this answer right away: who started at QB for Miami during Big Ben’s redshirt year?
Sammy Baugh?
Mike Bath.
Should’ve bee Ben.
Thanks…yeah I liked Mike…tough kid w a great attitude. His only problem was inconsistency w being accurate on his throws.
Slipped and slid out of bounds on a third down fourth quarter drive at Ohio State deep in Buckeye territory. He was leading a drive that would have made it a one score game. That was a close as we ever game to beating them.
That’s great info - so essentially, coaches miss ~33% of the time on just level of play with QB’s even though it’s the most scrutinized position in recruiting.
I think recruiting starts too early and kids are branded P5, G5, FCS before they even get to their Sr yr. Coaches buy into the star BS and listen to handlers and miss.
Apparently so. Noah Werzensky and Billy Bahl also come to mind in the Miami QB process. That kid from Incarnate Word is the poster child for what you just said. He wasn’t even a prospect coming out of high school. He played a year at FCS IW and just transferred to P5 Washington State with the coach who gave him a shot at IW. From overlooked in recruited to the PAC12.
My memory was the score was 20-16 when he slipped out of bounds and then we missed a short field goal
Mike Bath didn’t step out; the refs blew that call. I will go to my grave insisting we win that game if it had been called properly.
That’s right. We could have taken the lead. OSU scored a late TD to make the final 27-16. It was the 2000 game right?
It happened right in front of me and it looked like he lost his footing just behind the line to gain.
2000 yes, call blown by Big 10 refs.
Yeah I was at that Ohio State game as well…sure looked like he got in, and then wasn’t there a cheap shot when Bath got hit out of bounds?
