We beat a big ten team last year. No matter what you think about that team, he secured his spot.
I have to think bringing in Kopp and making him the #3 behind Aveon was the straw that broke the camel’s back for Joe. And Henry is apparently sitting in the #4 position.
Going to be tough to recruit and retain a top QB when you redshirt him and then recruit guys with multiple years of eligibility over him from the transfer portal in his sophomore year.
It’s the use them or lose them era now.
Master of the obvious notion here but here goes: every one of the QB’s we have was once “the man” during their recruitment. Maybe despite what the haters say, our program has elevated to the point we have dare I say…depth?
You have to believe the reality on the field did not match the hype.
He had two years to prove himself and win a spot.
Then again, there is the experience of the other Joe.
I think the QB room is a hot mess. Gabbert not going anywhere with two years left. Aveon backup when actually he’s not a true QB. The Kopp kid was ( I heard) promised no deeper than 3rd string. Hesson really should be back up. Humphreys is now gone after not getting to participate in Spring Ball and might have been the best long term option. Then, there are 3 more on the roster with a walk on coming in 2023.
I think your right.
Hot mess is probably a good description. Not really certain what the Kopp attraction was when we had at least two prized QB recruits already in the room. I’d be surprised if Hesson stays after this fall. Gus is going to have issues in there - both long and short term.
I would actually argue that we have a better QB room than 75% of the MAC. We have a bonafide starting QB who is the un-questioned leader of this team.
We have a back up QB who now has significant experience and has won games for us. It’s also not inconceivable that he will continue to improve as a passer.
We have a third string QB who was more highly recruited than any of them, including Humphreys.
A lot of MAC teams would gladly change places with us.
The fear I have now is Gabbert gets hurt. Aveon comes in and here we go again. He will gut out a few games no doubt. I do love him. He just can’t consistently throw the ball. He won’t get hurt because he’s made of iron. Then we have a repeat of 2022 season. I bet Kopp doesn’t play either. My rose colored glasses are gone and so is my patience.
I believe he had a year, 2022 was his first year
Absolutely hate to see Humphreys leave. He was the QB after #5 I was most excited about. I think this situation has unfortunately been mismanaged by the coaching staff.
Ballcoach, it’s clear you know more about football than I do. But a hot mess? Nah. It’s Groundhog Day. Everywhere. At all schools! Joe B. Of Bengals lore was QB 3/4 in Columbus. Thus: It’s hard to know even for experts. Put another way, I picked a trifecta once at my local pony venue, and I’m telling you on fact one of the horses ended up as dinner in France. And I’m a degenerate gambler! We have a good problem to have. I’d love to see BG have a big year.
You’re not wrong.
My fear is that if Gabbert leaves after this season, which seems likely, the staff will hand the ball to Aveon and Hesson and Kopp will also leave.
I have never seen Humphreys play in college so I have no idea if this is a devastating loss or the loss of a 5th string QB. The coaches apparently like AV and Copp better. I guess we will see. Martin said in the post game of the spring showcase that this is the best qb room he has had at Miami
Martin actually said he feels better about his QB room than in any of over 30+ years of coaching.
That would presumably include when he was OC at Notre Dame.
The question is would he amend that statement after Joe announced for the portal?
I have to think that when the guy was no better than 4th on his depth chart he would say no.
I said, as did others multiple times. that our fear was Humphreys would leave. Granted none of us have seen him in live college game action. But based on HS video, and it is just that, high school video, he seemed to be the most talented physically of the QBs we have signed in recent years. If I were OU, I would pounce on him. His ability to not only pass but run, as seen in his high school video, seems perfect for what they do. Personally, I would have put him on the field last year. Maybe he still transfers, who knows. And yes, before anyone says it, I am not in the coaches room. That is an obvious given.
Will this be another year of a long string of years drinking the Koolade in April and August and standing on the ledge in November? I guess only time will tell. But managing a QB room will continue to be a problem at Miami and other G5 programs. The situation with Humphries sends a graphic message to high school recruits about believing in the hype the head coach bestows upon you when he convinces you to sign the LOI.
He got a free education at a great school and would still have one had he stayed. How was he sent the wrong message?
Easy answer: That “you are going to be an integral part of our football program going forward” when you’re not going to be.
