Article below talks about NW’s soccer field being an option. Current capacity is only 2000, but temporary bleachers could be installed. Similar to U of Hawaii.
Sounds like NU may be trying to move the game back a day to play at Soldier Field.
I wonder why they are not considering playing during week zero. Sunday at Soldier Field would be OK. It is Labor Day weekend so Monday would be a Holiday and make it easy to et home in time for work/school. Also, it is a big NFL stadium and tickets would be easily available for everyone who wanted to go.
Sunday, Sept 1 at Soldier Field is what the article suggests as an option.
Week 0 would not be good for us since we already have a bye in week 2 because every MAC team on our schedule has an OOC game in week 2. We wouldn’t want a two week bye. Also, playing Sunday of week 1 gives us extra practice time for the Northwestern game and 13 days off before UC.
The other benefit of playing the game on that Sunday is it would likely be on national TV. Last year, Northwestern played at Rutgers at noon and Oregon State played at San Jose State at 3:30. Not exactly the biggest games, but both were on CBS. Teams don’t play on Sunday because they don’t want a short week of practice after their first game. The only game currently scheduled for that day is LSU/USC in Vegas at 7:30 on ABC.
The PGA Tour Championship is scheduled to finish on Sunday, September 1st on NBC. So it seems CBS would be wide open for 2 college games that day.
If we have Week 2 off then a Sunday game wouldn’t be much of an issue since we’d still have a bye week to prep for UC. Would be great if we could get a big Miami crowd there at Soldier Field with Labor Day weekend, the Northwestern student attendance will probably be minimal since their fall quarter usually doesn’t start until a week or so later.
I don’t see Northwestern getting an entire music festival moved to play @ SeatGeek, so Soldier Field on a Sunday seems very likely. Hopefully the game date/time gets announced officially soon so our fans can start planning.
Matt Brown of the Extra Points newsletter looked into it with the Northwestern athletic department, he posted on the CSN site that it’ll probably be another month at least before anything official is announced.
If Sunday at Soldier Field is confirmed it’d be a great opportunity for Miami to offer a Chicago weekend package so we maximize attendance for the game. Include tickets, two nights at a hotel in the South Loop, Saturday admission to one of the attractions in the Museum Campus, and a pregame Sunday brunch/tailgate. This is the most momentum we’ve had going into a season in ages, use it. I want to see Soldier Field filled with red like the Chiefs are in town.
Could not agree more. Unfortunately, your plan is too attractive, makes too much sense, would be too exciting, and reinforcing Miami spirit, and might/would be a real positive in driving attendance and support, for all sports. Therefore, the odds of anything close to that happening is highly unlikely.
Sorry. Love the foresight. Too bad.
NU seeking approval to construct a temporary stadium seating 15K on the site of their current soccer/lacrosse field. Would be a gorgeous setting right on Lake Michigan, but takes away some excess capacity for non-Wildcat fans (certainly by design).
Only 15,000? Where are the Northwestern fans going to sit?
So crazy. Just move the game to Oxford and put it in Week 0. Attendance will probably be the same ![]()
This really is getting stupid. Just move it to Oxford on either Friday or Saturday night
Or, (and I’m just blue skying it here so go with it) what if we…just moved it to Oxford?
How much is Northwestern going to pay us? Let’s make a deal. We’ll take half the original amount, move the game to Oxford, and all Northwestern fans will get a food and drink voucher.
At this stage can they even get it approved and built in time? Lots of moving pieces to tie up.
As far as I know where/when we play them has already been decided, just not announced publicly
If I’m hearing you right (and I think I am) you’re telling us they are playing at Meigs Field and there may or may not be planes landing during the game. It’s probably going to be the most insane venue ever for a game.
Edit: it turns out it no longer exists. I didn’t know that. Bummer. Was a crazy place to fly into.
I really wish the date and place would be announced soon. We mature retired people have important things to plan.
