Definitely in the Word Association thread!

Back when I was flying in the Air Force we had a saying, never cancel on a forecast.

This is too early. Had to set alarm for 5:45 for 7:40 tee time. One of my regular partners had to be finished by 12:15.

I’m still watching the end of Mannix at 3:am!

OK…Not Mannix, but always something.

The Latest…

Driving distances getting better as I bring the swing behind me in an arc. But wet surfaces lately don’t help.

Bought a 7-iron to use for pitching when 85-100 yards away. Works pretty well.

Hybrids are frustrating. On dry ground and short grass, I’m pretty happy. If it’s a bit damp or off the fairway, I hit it and pray.

Today we played in Xenia at Jasper Hills. It’s a haul (40 minutes away) but partners wanted the free hamburger and drink after 9 holes. I had a 54 and 50 for 104 from Gold tees (about 5700 yards). Not one of my best rounds. Frustrated.

But…We play again at Jamaica Run later in the week and I should rebound.

Edit - Just one letter!

The Good - Nice day to golf (for February). low 60s and no rain.

The Bad - The course. Yankee Trace is a very nice course. It’s less than 10 minutes from Springboro but today it was squishy. Huge mud divots on the fairway.

The Ugly - My score. Played Legend and Heritage Gold tees - About 5,750 yards. 58 and 53 for 111. My 5 wood and 4 hybrid just seemed to dig into the ground and the distance was often…well…embarrassing.

Drives were mostly in the 135-155 range instead of the usual 165-195.

But…It’s early and we’re back at it at Community Golf Course Friday.

Oh yea…I changed balls from Callaway SuperSoft to MaxFly Tour S. We’ll see how it goes.

The edit was small. I promise.

Your balls are filthy. Play Pro V. You will lose them but remember this: Calloway is not the way.
Ps. I love your stock predictions. Walmart made me good ROI. Nvidia will but not yet.

Hit ‘em straight!!!

Q: Which way are you going?
A: The Call-o-way

I use ProVs but only when I’m playing Oakmont, TPC Sawgrass, Doral, The Lakes, or Cog Hill. All other times it’s Top Flight X-outs.

Back to lurking.

No. No no no no no no. No.
Callaway is a junk ball. Titelist is better. Almost any even beyond ProV if you don’t want to swing the loot for a case. Bridgestone also great. The minute you start playing cheap balls well, instead of Sting telling Roxanne to turn off the red light he’s like “Actually, Roxeanne, keep hooking…”

I will contradict myself in one key place: desert golf. A lot of the fairways have small rocks in them and you will not play great if the cover gets abused. I can dig it when someone plays a Topflite there but no feel so around the green it gets dicey.

I just assume that the ProV balls would not benefit me because of my club speed.

According to the simulator, when driving, it is typically in the 84 mph to 92 mph range.

By the way…Surprisingly, a 123 mph club speed showed up last week! I knew it wasn’t accurate. I showed one of the pros at Yankee Trace (I was using their simulator), and he agreed it was an odd glitch. I believe I was hitting with am 8 iron or 9 iron.

Oh well.

I don’t think speed alone is what matters. I play with a friend sometimes who has pro level club head speed but he’s wild. Just Army golf all the time. (He’s left right left right). If you play fitted clubs (you should) with prolly graphite shafts, you’ll be fine.

They’re not fitted but I believe they are graphite. I’ll have to text you pics.

Agree with much of what Yellow#5 says. While there is some truth in the swing speed / ball compression theory, I wouldn’t base my choice on that as a deciding factor. If your swing is 85-90, that’s not terribly slow, and you can handle a 90/100 compression ball.

To me, $$$ is my #1 reason, and that meant I typically bought the 2nd-best Titleist ball even when I was a good player and could hit the ball far.

I did a lot of research on this topic last year when determining what golf ball to buy for my daughter, and kinda decided it’s best to try out different ones in a simulator or just try some on the course and go with which ones you think are the best.

Interesting article on the topic:

Not a lot of girls playing (although more than historically) so she should do well.

Today was better.

88 at Community Golf Course, but MUCH shorter total yardage.

Fairways were dryer, which helped.

But…Still can’t wait until the ground is firmer and dryer, and the the July-air is back.

I assume it could easily increase distance by 25-50 yards.

Hey, your game is coming along nicely.

Thanks. But in fairness, the 88 was from just beyond the Gold tees at Community, so the yardage was about 4,300.

Typically, we play from about 5,100-5,700.

I died today. It was a slow painful death, which made it worse.

103 on Community Hills Course (109 slope). This included four mulligans.

Fairway shots with 5-Wood were horrible.Irons were erratic. I never hit a green on any of the Par-3s. And my driving consistently inconsistent.

I now hate golf. I play again next Tuesday. Unless I choose to sleep in instead.

Edit: Mulligans.

Sounds to me like you’re the typical golfer.

Just remember your good shots, and maybe work in a small range session to hit a few shots with the clubs you hate, but don’t go overboard.

I died a second death today. A 104 instead of a 103 on the same course (from last week). Had two pars, but fairway shots were incredibly inconsistent. Also had a 9 on a hole… I had not done that since I started playing in 2023.

But…It is March and not September, so I’m only mildly irritated.

What keeps me going are the pars.

Eddie, I’m still beyond mad about hoops but I want to help you so I’ll comment. Work a lot on your putting. Prove you can make 30 three foot putts in a row. Or die trying. If you do this you will be in the 90s every time.

Ps, don’t hit your drive for fun. Just hit your three wood. See what happens.
