Game week -- Kentucky!

As I have mentioned before my daughter is a Shako (now a senior😢). The UK game was in the original band schedule but they didnt have the funds. Also my daughter said they would have only been able to take 100 per UK rules- I have no way to verify that one

Speed and explosiveness was the difference in the game. If they got a player behind us, we were not going to be able to chase him down. If we got a player behind them, they were able to chase him down. Big offensive plays, we had none. Big offensive plays, they had several. We probably won more plays than they did, but they had all those big plays.

The entire game, Gabbert was being forced to scramble or run. Other than Hippenhammer, receivers were not getting open very often. Brett has always been injury prone, missing time every season. Sitting in the stands, we were bitching about Chuck leaving him in at the end because the game was decided and it was obvious an injury could happen plus Smith desperately needed to get his feet wet and for the first time in his career be allowed to run and throw and try to create something. That was a huge coaching error.

I’m not scrolling through the whole thread but our long snapper is a huge problem. If that’s as fast as he can fire it back to the punter, we’re going to lead the nation in punts blocked.

We are in total agreement on that. As soon as AJ left we knew we were desperately short of QB game experience. The last ten minutes last night would have been an ideal time to battle test our QB2.

After watching the results of the MAC contests against P5 teams this weekend I am increasingly disappointed in the level of play in the MAC. The top of the MAC is now probably just below the top two or three teams in the FCS Missouri Valley. NDSU is the FCS equivalent of 2007 Boise State. Recently South Dakota State and UNI have proven themselves capable of playing close games with the likes of Iowa, Iowa State and other P5 teams. Meanwhile, MAC teams increasingly struggle mightily against the P5. Kent State looked glaringly inferior last night to a Washington team coming off a 4-8 season that included a loss to FCS Montana. And I see MAC squads increasingly struggling against non-marquee FCS opponents and even losing to some - like Ohio’s encounter with Duquesne last fall. .

Toledo gave Notre Dame all they could handle last season. They’ve got a trip to Ohio State coming up in a couple of weeks. Maybe they can rep the MAC well in CBus. But I’m not optimistic.

I think Kentucky is a top 15 team. Our effort was pretty correct save for 2 bad plays. Same with Central. Only thing hurting the MAC is that bad podium. Teams will spring an upset soon. Maybe us!

Same guy we had last year.

He was also just awarded a scholarship so the coaches don’t seem to agree with your assessment.

The problem with the punt was that the middle blocker let himself get steamrolled.

Well I could walk the ball back to the punter faster than he snapped but what do I know, I’m an idiot fan and media. And it’s still going to be a problem. That ain’t good enough for college football.

Last year, we had some beers with the army football team after the game in West Point.

They said our snap to kick time was the slowest of all the teams they had played.

A couple nice compliments for MU, but also noted that UK didn’t show some running plays in anticipation of the Florida match this weekend.

It’s behind a paywall

Oy. Not surprisingly unfortunately.

Below should be a list of all non-Oxford games where the band has played since 2009. We were scheduled to play at Mizzou in 2010 but they were going to charge us for tickets, so instead they played at a high school festival in Wildwood, MO where yours truly in his junior year watched the MUMB before I even applied.

2009 Kentucky (PBS)
2010 MACC
2010 Godaddy Bowl
2012 OSU
2014 Michigan
2014 UC (PBS)
2016 UC (Nippert)
2016 St. Pete Bowl
2017 Notre Dame
2018 UC (PBS)
2019 UC (Nippert)
2019 OSU
2019 MACC
2019 Lending Tree Bowl
2021 UC (Nippert)
2021 Frisco Classic

If I were sufficiently wealthy to endow the band, I’d make sure they have enough funding to play at least one P5 away game per season, all UC away games, all OU away games, and a band-specific trip (e.g. BOA Super Regionals). In additon to new instruments, more full-time staff, etc.

Maybe the issue can be solved with technology. Say AR. Having the real band in person there would be great. But if not possible, buy a few seats together in a block. Have loyal fans hold up large boards, broadcast/project the band off those boards. Heck, if every Miami fan in attendance wore a large QR code on their shirt, you could use freeze the game on tv and then use your phone to scan the code off your screen whereby it would then start auto playing the band. Done!

More solutions from the SV! Lol

Thanks.I agree with your optimum list of possible appearances.

Agreed…but really it was one guy for UK making us look bad (Robinson…ironically a teammate of Brunson?)…our new Corner #2, maybe will adjust.

Our special teams, less FG (which was great)…needs a ton of work…and we spotted UK about 17 points overall combo of two to three plays, including ST.

Otherwise we matched up well physically…pass protect needs to gel a bit, but the OL was moving some big dudes in run game.

Tyre was flying by guys…and Hippenhammer looked great, Muersch, and Marshall coming on …

I still feel good about my 9-10 wins projection. 2bad plays does not ruin that.

Until we see Qb play hard to say.

Brett out for remainder of OOC schedule likely…so most likely a typical result there.

Beat Robert Morris …o’fer against rest, inuding UC of course…

Sucks…but Chuck does not even acknowledge that 37-13 with 3 to 5 to go…that there’s no reason for Brett to be in game.

Most people here know way more about football than I do but here’s my poorly informed opinion. Brett is a fantastic game manager who gets hurt a lot. Aveon is a runner. The Hesson is a hired mercenary who helped the British in The Revolutionary war. And the freshman is raw but apparently has loads of talent and a huge arm. Can we somehow combine all options into one QB? All seem to have varying limitations otherwise.

With only an occasional and rare exception, kids who end up in the MAC do so because they are some combination of too short, too undersized, too slow or lacking in some other intangible that the P-5 gets all excited about. With recruiting the way it is today, it is very, very hard for what we might consider a 4-star athlete to end up in the MAC playing FB…and, there is always the occasional exception…which I hope Miami can occasionally land.
if the talent in a conference tends to get equally spread around, facilities, campus life and educational quality can be a difference maker…as, of course can coaching ability.
The portal has shown that kids who were "under-recruited in high school and settled for a MAC school can opt out and up more readily than in the old days while former decent athletes who end up riding the bench at a P-5 school can opt out and down to gain playing time at MAC-type schools.

Well thought and articulate post but I feel it lacks context around the Covid years. Todays sophomore/ RS Freshman class largely did not attend camps as they were canceled due to Covid. They also were not allowed in person recruiting in the spring of their junior year. Not to mention that some did not have HS seasons, some had drastically altered HS seasons.

Both the ā€˜21 and ā€˜22 classes have been recruited very differently. Both have had to compete with college rosters where players were granted an additional year of eligibility. This in addition to competing against the portal.

My opinion is that their are far more P5 types in the G5’s due to the challenges of recruiting. I also believe that more mistakes were made at the P5 level simply because the process forced coaches to make decisions will less data.
