Game week -- Kentucky!

I am optimistic as well.

Unless Gabbert is out for a while.

Then I am far less optimistic.

How good is our number 2 QB? Any insights?
Let’s hope that Gabbert will only be out against Robert Morris but if his shoulder is separated we’re ā€œscrewedā€.

I might be in the minority here but who’s to say one of the backups isn’t the guy? Brett is great but got the job as a freshman. Maybe one of the reserves ends up being the next big thing.

That’s partly why I asked the question about our backups…to be honest, with Gabbert so entrenched as the starter I kinda stopped paying enuff attention to our QB recruiting and expectations of the new kids coming in…do some of you guys who followed our recruiting very closely feel we have some intriguing possibilities if Gabbert is seriously injured?

Smith came in and showed some wheels but missed a wide open Walker badly a play later. Probably nerves.

Joe Humphries was the highly touted Frosh, and I believe one of the highest rated recruits we’ve ever had. I believe the plan is to redshirt him

Hesson is another freshmen. Had offers to all MAC schools. Haven’t heard much about him

Yardage was 353-290 Kentucky. First downs were 20-17 Kentucky. They were barely better than us, it was just a cascade of fluke plays that made it look like a blowout. Cincinnati is still tough and might be a bridge too far, but I’d be pretty disappointed if we aren’t able to beat this Northwestern team to end the streak (*contingent on Gabbert being healthy).

According to ESPN, Brett suffered an undisclosed arm injury to his non-throwing arm. If it’s dislocated or broken collar bone, we are…in trouble.

Gabbett started his true freshman year out of necessity, it was either him or Jackson Williamson since Gus Ragland had just graduated. Imo if we had a QB as good as Andrew Hendrix/Zac Dysert on the roster they would’ve gotten the nod. Didn’t hurt that he had P5 interest and his older brother to build hype coming in.

It was Gabbert or AJ Mayer or Jackson Williamson. And I wouldn’t put it as he started out of necessity. I think Gabbert earned the start simply because he was better than the other two.

To clarify, Hesson is a RS Fr. A bit more similar to Gabbert than Smith is. He’s also higher on the depth chart than Humphries right now.

As for the injury, I haven’t heard anything but I’ve played QB with a separated left shoulder. It’s possible to play. You lose a bit of flexibility in your throwing motion because of the pain and the braces they’ll put you in. The closest obvious example I can point to is Baker Mayfield with the left shoulder problem. If Gabbert doesn’t need surgery now, it would be really beneficial to give him a week off.

Amen to that!

Game announcers talked about being amazed that the rain and stong storms predicted failed to materialize. Worked out well weather wise…

Absolutely NO need for him to suit up vs Rob Morris. We need to play at least two QB next week.

I dont think that is a fair representation of the difference of the teams. They were 3-4 touchdowns better than us

No…but as I estimated above I think 2 tds is fair…and that’s a good SEC team.

Unreal, unfortunate if Brett is out…hope more if a partial separation of non throwing.

In any event Hesson looked good in practice…Aveon capable, maybe nerves at UK.

What was the Miami crowd like last night in Lexington? The broadcast was as complete a home town homer as I’ve ever seen. They showed Swoop once when he mugged the pylon camera but otherwise it was like there was no acknowledged Miami contingent - no fans, no cheerleaders.

I assume Miami didn’t send the band even though it was just a 90 minute to two hour roll. I never heard our fight song. Did we travel well? That’s one of the things bowl selection folks look at at the end of the season.

Looked like a nice section of red, they showed them right after our opening drive TD.

The MUMB has a tiny budget, it was only $50K annually when I was there 2012-16 (OSU was like $750K for reference). If they have any trip of any significance this year, the only game away from Oxford they’ll attend is UC at PBS (plus any potential MACC or bowl games).

Thanks. I looked at their fall schedule and the only ā€œawayā€ game they’re doing is our ā€œhomeā€ game at Paul Brown. Our funding for band travel really has gotten small. They were at Michigan in 2014 and at Notre Dame in 2017. That’s the last time I’ve seen them at a regular season away game. I’m assuming the MAC probably contributes to band participation at the MACC. It’s certainly in the conference’s branding interest to do so. There is some funding for band participation a a number of post season bowls. Since COVID it appears we are trying to do most everything on a shoestring.

The band was at Ohio State in 2019.
