Bowl Projections 2024

Is this the right math. Would the 77 teams include the 12 playoff teams? I think there are 4 playoff bowls too. So should it be 65 qualified for 74 spots?

The 77 includes the 12 playoff teams as bowl eligible teams.

The playoff is 4 campus site games, the new years six, and the championship. Since teams play in multiple rounds, it nets out to the same number of slots as just having the NY6 + the championship in previous years. It’s not adding or removing any overall slots.

Latest ESPN projections have us for Detroit versus UConn (meh) or Bahamas versus Liberty.

Jerry Palm has us in Detroit vs Michigan. I guess that’s probably based on an assumption that we’ll lose at BG.

Michigan State. I can’t see Michigan accepting the game originally known as the Motor City Bowl, despite the location.

If there are more bowl eligible teams than spots, a 6-win P4 team could get selected over a 7 or 8 win MAC team, right?

Ugh.

They are guessing EMU not ending up bowling eligible I guess. (they are 5-6 and play WMU this week). Previously many prognosticators had them penciled into Detroit…maybe WMU takes their place.

And yes, with more Power conference 6-6 bowl eligible teams, they could ace out a MAC bowl possibility at a non MAC guaranteed slot. I believe the MAC has 6 slots, and that may be all the teams with .500 records we will have.

The MAC will have 7 bowl eligible teams (winner of EMU/WMU will be the 7th). If there are too many teams total, that 7th MAC team will almost certainly be one of the ones left out. And it doesn’t have to be one of the 6-6 teams either, though it likely would be.

As stated earlier by previous posters, sure glad we already got our 7 wins so we theoretically won’t be on that bubble w the 6-6 G5 schools. Normally I wouldn’t be too excited by a 7-5 type season but given the reality of our 0-3 start, I’ll take it! (that is, if we don’t beat BG to advance to the MACC, which would be far better of course!)

Nescadad: Any other updated bowl projections with us w in a more desirable location?

P.S. would add Sporting News just updated their predictions and have us in Myrtle Beach vs. South Alabama, and Athlon Sports has us in Boca vs. James Madison.

Yeah, Michigan will change their colors to scarlet and grey before playing a lower tier bowl against a MAC school. Imo they’ll either get a bowl better than their standing based on their name, or they’ll stay home altogether. I think MSU would be up for it though, a rebuilding program like them will want the extra practices (and it’ll be a near-home game).

The MAC has 6 contracted bowl agreements.

Well, the Big Ten will have a minimum of two, maybe up to 4 teams in the playoffs and Washington+USC are eligible for the PAC-12 tie-ins only. So the odds are good they’d get a solid bowl without needing a bowl to reach down for a name brand (which probably will still happen anyways).

CFN has us playing Colorado State in Tucson.

Not bad…

USA Today updated their bowl projections today and have us penciled into the Myrtle Beach Bowl against…wait for it…the Thundering Herd of Huntington!

I suggested that match-up on the Myrtle Beach Bowl’s Facebook page last week. I said it would rekindle an old rivalry and give the game a perfect Holiday colored visual.lol

Yeah it would be a good match up and Marshall has a lot of alums in that area and I think the game would be pretty well attended. Lotsa hard feelings (to put it mildly) between the fan bases, too!
I suppose there are negatives to the Monday 11am kick-off time on December 23, but the game is on ESPN and not sure but guessing it would be the only game on at that time.

Man, I would love to see us give the Herd a beat down!
