Well thats one way to deflate the positivity from the first game
14 points over the final 16 minutes.
After 54 points over the initial 24 minutes.
WSU - 55% FG
Miami - 42% FG
Raiders 81
RedHawks 68
Well that was a shit show.
My one take away is that Skaljjac is our best guard. He’s the only one who can consistently create his own shot. Cooper is really limited offensively and we have no idea what we’ll get from Ipsaro game to game (going back to last season.)
Also, all the progress I saw defensively in game one was complete absent today. They got whatever they wanted.
Deflating indeed. Got very few easy buckets. Allowed plenty of easy buckets. Ugh. That was a rough 2nd half.
Massive foul trouble for our big men all game and they were able to kill us inside as a result. Noel with 27 points and 16 rebounds.
Brutal offensive cold streak in the second half. From 16:15 to 2:25 we went 4/21 and had 6 turnovers.
Disappointing result, but once we get healthy and our players get more experience playing together, I think that’s a game we win much more often than not.
We played good up until the 6 minute mark in the second. Gonna be spotty early going but we are way better than before. Sucks to lose to Orville and Wilbur U but if we go dancing in March, all will be forgotten. Kam is gonna be fun. Where’s Dan L? Injured?
I missed the press conference. Did a member of the media ask about Potter?
I did not see the press conference but on HawkTawk this week Steele again mentioned Potter should be back soon.
One step forward, hopefully only one and not two steps back. This sure wasn’t what I expected after the Appy State performance.
I am disappointed, but hopeful.
Fair, but Wright St. looked way more comfortable playing this pace than we did. Our guards never settled the game down in the 1st half.
In the 2nd half, we didn’t adjust to their defense funneling everything into the middle and making our penetrators force up a tough shot or make an awkward kickout pass. Wright State got the same looks in the 2nd half they did in the 1st half, just made more of them. We got worse looks in the 2nd half and our shotmakers couldn’t make the tough shots. We only had 10 assists for the game, 2 in the 2nd half. Wright St. scored 21 points off of turnovers.
Defensively, the same intensity and focus that was there Monday night wasn’t there today. We didn’t get our hands on as many balls and didn’t disrupt their offensive flow.
Outcoached and outplayed today. It is only the 2nd game so 1 shouldn’t get too overexcited, just like with the win in the 1st game. While we have some experience, we’re still a pretty young team trying to grow. Wright St. has some older guys and I think that came through today and impacted the result.
Travis needs to be fired
From being at the game, I noticed the following:
-
The game got chippy in the first half and some shoving got going into a time out in the second half. So there was some talking.
-
Kam Craft needs to get the ball more. WSU shut him down in the second half and that was it. The kid can get out and go. He’s a good shooter who needs the ball more
-
Pete Suder needed to shut up and play ball. He seemed more interested in running his trap than playing. A few times the WSU players almost retaliated. When he focused on playing he has a ton of potential
-
Brandon Noel. Holy cow. He’s gotten better from last year
Personally, I hate this matchup. It’s the two schools I cheer for most and for the sport I love best. I had to wear Blue to not favor one school over another. Someone’s gotta have more points than the other and Wright State had it today.
But Miami has potential and I feel really optimistic going into the season with these players. The talent is there. Just need to put it together and shoot for the conference and post season
Our guards got outplayed most of the day. Only Luke Skaljac was playing well; my biggest coaching complaint is that although he was by far the most effective guard he did not get to play in the second half until the game was basically over. Now I do understand that the two practices and one scrimmage and one game on the internet, which are the times I have watched us play so far, the other 3 guards had played better. But today in the first half he seemed to come into his own and was easily our best guard in the first half, he should have been in there long before we were down double digits late.
We went into halftime on a roll with a great last minute or two, but seemingly came out flat, maybe it was just that Wright State made defensive adjustments which made it really hared for us to get a good shot in the second half. Craft kept us in the game for awhile, but then they shut him down too. The most discouraging thing to me was that with 5 or 6 minutes to go and down 8 or 10, our body language was terrible. We knew that we had tried everything we could and just could not get a good shot, everything ended up being one on one and forced.
Wright State was far better than App State. Their two stars and their point guard were all better than us. Getting both centers in foul trouble early really hurt our lineups. Elmer had a slow start, then played really well. Craft was very good, but they finally were able to shut him down the last 10 minutes or so. They watched the tape of our first game and decided to take Studer out of the game and they did.
One other thing about today, I thought we were going to get the full 10 or 12 row bleachers back at the end of the court that we had in the 90’s. Weren’t we told that at the end of last season?? Instead they just had those little worthless 3 rows mini bleachers. Once again, no central location for a student rowdy cheering section.
Mostly negative comments, I know. After watching how well we played at App State, I was not expecting this today. I still think we will be better than last year, but today we did not look ready to compete at the top MAC level. Compared to Wright State, we are young and inexperienced and it showed.
I guess we are not as good as we showed against Appy st and not as bad as we showed against Wright St.
We needed to take out one of their top 2 scorers, but with foul trouble at the post position & no Potter, stopping Noel became difficult; and Huibregtse was too good.
A healthy Potter may have made a difference.
Also, as DICK pointed out at the game and at the start of this thread, most of their players have redshirted; I checked the box score and their roster, every player has redshirted except 1 senior who did not start, and 3 freshmen who did not get into the game and may be redshirting.
Wright State is a very old roster & Miami is still relatively young - we got schooled in the second half by a very veteran team!
And yet we just fine until the last 6 minutes. We were down 3 at 6:02 There’s no need to panic over a bad six minutes of play the second game of the year. We were right there the rest of the game. The end score is deceiving. Team has plenty of work to do to get us back to a meaningful March, but the sky isn’t falling by any stretch.
Two words to describe yesterday:
It’s early
If this is happening at OU in January/February then it’s time to worry. Now, let the team and coaches watch the game film and figure things out
