So so you think we will hear news of an additional mens BB recruit soon now that the dead period is over or do you think he will pocket this last ship? I would have to think he would want to add another player. I think we need a bigger wing or post player assuming he is one of the better players available. Always need to be cognizant of both need and best available philosophy. Lost Kamari Smith Rylee. Our depth has been thinned out a bit.

And right after typing the above I checked the transfer portal and apparently Darweshi Hunter, a 6’5" SG from NIU is transferring to Miami!

This seems like a smart add. Guy has experience and although maybe only a year of eligibility left (I’m guessing on this part since he’s played at a D2 school, Weber State, NIU, and now MU) but that’s ok as the young kids behind him should be ready for big minutes by their 2nd year anyways.

Came on latter half of they year, with 9 out of 10 double digits scoring games to end the year. Didn’t rebound much (3.0rpg) and had 15 assists/28 turnovers, so needs to improve both of those. But seems like a scoring threat we can bring in off the bench to spell Safford or Mabrey.

He and Curtis Harrison both spent a year at Dohn Prep in Cincinnati. Don’t know if it was same year.

Central State

12 ppg in MAC play last year. Shot 44/93 from 3 in MAC play. 47.3% from 3 with a lot of attempts - impressive!

Seems like an excellent addition.

I like the addition. Nice shooter with a good frame and very experienced in the MAC. Morgan Safford saw his numbers and percentages really jump in year 1 in Oxford. Hopefully the staff can coax a similar leap out of Hunter.

By any chance is he related to Ron Hunter? Curious minds want to know.

Phil I was going to say the same thing re improvement in Safford’s numbers. Hopefully we see the same with Hunter. If he can score the entire year, like he did in February then we have something! Again, looks like a good rotation player with Safford.

Mac FPOTY Reggie Bass portals out of CMU to Kent

Big pick up

I have no problem with Kent getting a quality transfer. I’m glad Bass opted to stay in the MAC. We need as many quality players in the conference as we can get. As a conference, we need to win some November and December games against quality/ranked teams. Close is not good enough. With those wins, as we all know, it becomes tougher to ignore a 26-27 win team. Make it 27 with two big wins and we rise in the ratings and make our argument stronger.
A rising tide lifts all boats.

I’m luke warm on this one.

I did like reading this:

ā€œHunter averaged 20.7 points per game as a freshman at Central State in Dayton, Ohio in 2019-20, second most among Division I freshman that season. After being named to the All-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) First Team, as well as SIAC Freshman of the Year and Newcomer of the Yearā€¦ā€

But………4 colleges since high school is a huge red flag IMO. And he wasn’t even a consistent starter on a 13-19 NIU team.

With almost 1000 kids in the portal, I figured Steel would have been able to land a higher profile player. At a minimum, I thought he would have been able to pull one of his former players at X.

I hope Steele knows what he’s doing.

1000% chance this staff sees something in this guy and isn’t just filing a roster hole. There isn’t a player within 500 miles of campus they likely haven’t at least seen or heard of. I would imagine they had a file on him. And they are likely thinking ā€œis he coachable, can he be a good role model, can he be productive.ā€ Seems like a good get to me.

Do you want the 6’9" forward averaging 2.4 ppg and only 2 rpg (and could only play the 5 in our system, where the team is set), the 6’8" forward he didn’t recruit who averaged 0.7 ppg, or the grad transfer PG who averaged 2.3 and 0.3 ppg the last two seasons? Please tell me which you’d take over Hunter…

So focused on ā€œprofileā€ you forgot talent was more important.

I have to say, at times, this board is rather caustic to the posters. One can disagree with a post without going into attack mode.

It wasn’t meant to be an attack. It’s a genuine question. Who from Xavier’s list of transfers would you take over Hunter? @aba222 made a statement they’d prefer someone from Xavier. I looked at who left and listed them to see which they were talking about. I don’t see any that have comparable talent.

And without any additional context from aba, it seems like a big slap in the face to someone who has clearly worked to improve year over year. How long can someone live off their high school rankings?
