Sherman Smith, Tim Fortney also.
Chris Thomas could have been an outstanding running back. He was bigger than George Swarn and almost just as fast. He was behind George on the depth chart and after George left they decided to move Chris to fullback and move a DB, a much smaller DB, over to be a running back.
Sherman didn’t play RB until he got to Seattle. He was part of the tandem QB scheme with Steve Sanna at Miami.
And of course…we now know his son is Deland McCullough!
He ran the ball more tha he threw it. Also, his percentage of success on third or fourth and 1 was as good as last year’s Eagles . Ioi
The Athletic published its Top 15 Group of 5 football coaches list this week. Two MAC coaches made the list - Jason Candle at #12 and Chris Creighton at #13. Jim McElwain is listed at the top of the list of a group of ten others who “just missed” the Top 15 list.
So, in other words, CM didn’t make the cut.
Roger that.
Not a shock given our woes on offense.
And our persistent near .500 records in spite of having secured several top or near top recruiting classes. The 2023 season sets up as a critical one.
Martin is going into his 10th season at Miami, which will see him pass Walker as longest-tenured coach in program history IIRC. Very rare to see someone in a MAC football job for that long, they usually find their way up or out by that point.
Yes Martin has found that strange “sweet spot” where his performance isn’t good enough to get him a P5 HC gig, nor poor enough to get canned (although the latter has been debated on this board from time to time); instead, he has remained rather firmly (so it seems) in place here at Miami w a .500 type program. Not sure we’ve seen that here at Miami before although in past year’s expectations of performance were much higher.
Football is, by far, Miami’s best major men’s sport now. If Chuck has a 9 + win season he will be hired by a Power 5 program.
9 tries that has not happened…huge “if.”
As Dandy Don used to say: “If ifs and buts we’re candy and nuts, oh what a merry Christmas we’d all have.”
Light it up!
What’s the improvement with the scoreboard. Visually it looks like they’ve just done away with the two big ads.
It’s meant to simulate the black curtain.
