2023 Cincinnati Reds thread

Reds offense has improved a bit since the return of Fraley, Friedl, India, etc. India has come back on fire. Interesting stat. With the win over the Tigers last night the Reds won their 25th interleague game and their .641 interleague winning percentage is best in the NL. Not many games left so the Reds need to keep winning to hopefully secure a spot in the playoffs. Either way, this has been a successful season on the whole.

One guy who has really come on as of late is Stephenson. He was in a funk most of the year but he is making good contact and had the key hit to win the game last night. Having India back has provided a spark to the team. Also, I heard that McLain is going to take batting practice on the 18th, so if that goes well, he might be back for the last week or two.

Bell is using every guy ( almost every game lol) which is perfect. They are grinding it out and these teams do not have the depth to match up. Slowly we keep adding guys coming off the DL. The Reds have an excellent plan and are executing it. Yesterday everybody that we wanted to lose lost and the Reds won. Today was pretty close to that. At this point, I am thinking anything is possible, including jumping up to the second or first WC spot.

I like the stats Blues has been throwing out there, so here is a great one. The Reds now have seven guys who have both double digit steals and homers ( Benson, Fraley, Friedl, Steer, India, McLain, and De La Cruz). The only other team to ever do this is the 2017 Brewers.

With 15 games to play the Cincinnati Reds hold a playoff spot. Lol.

Tejay Antone…fudge.

The Reds have used 40 pitchers this season. Forty.

I’m drinking a 40 reading this!
Ok, I lied. It’s a wine spritzer. But does it really matter?

I’m really hoping that Antone’s injury is minor. Dude has already had two Tommy John surgeries, took two years of rehab to come back from the most recent one. And he only had two healthy weeks back with the team, and looked close to his old self, albeit with a different pitch repertoire to compensate for diminished velocity (I think). If it’s another TJS it’s probably game over for him, and after he overcame all the obstacles to get to this point in his career, would just be heartbreaking for a great guy and great pitcher.

Antone didn’t think it was anything serious but using the phrase elbow discomfort on a guy who’s had two Tommy John’s is never good news.

And the Reds are doing it without sacrificing the long term by trading away high end prospects for a rental player at the trade deadline. Whether they make the playoffs or not remains to be seen. But I said as the time, I was fine with them standing pat as their plan, and I remain committed to that position.

Excellent stat Dick.

  • Standings update: The Reds (76-71) moved ahead of the D-backs (76-71) for the third NL Wild Card spot. Though they have the same record, Cincinnati holds the tiebreaker over Arizona by virtue of winning the season series, 4-3.

Sam Moll hasn’t allowed a run in 17 of his 18 outings since joining the Reds at the trade deadline.

I know it’s a long shot, but don’t rule out the possibility of finishing as the top wild card. Phillies are only 3.5 ahead of the Reds and they still have some games left against the Braves. The NL wild card race is absolutely insane. Cubs play the D’Backs this weekend-something will have to give there. Playoffs or not, I am so proud of this team for fighting into September!

Agree. Think the Reds started out like 7-15 . This has been a pleasant surprise.

Reds did not do much today, losing 8-2. Good news is Miami lost and Arizona is down 8-1 late.

Tied for last NL WC spot. Mets next

It would be ideal for the Reds to win 3 in NY. It would be good if they could win 2. It would not be good to win just one, but it wouldn’t kill the season. It would be a disaster to get swept. Mets are coming into this series very hot. They were considered one of the favorites in the spring, so they do have a lot of talent.

Their best remaining starter, Senga, just pitched so we will miss him. While the Mets were loaded with talent when the season started, much of it is gone now. The top two starters are gone, their top 2 relievers are gone, 2 starting OF’s are gone. No real excuse for us to not win this series.

Last night was effectively a must win for the Reds with their best starting pitcher on the bump. Mission accomplished. Now get one of the next 2.

Giants blow 9th inning lead to Rockies. Not that Fangraphs playoff odds mean much, but with that loss (which they were heavily favored) San Fran drops from 47% odds to capture last playoff spot to 31%. Reds jump from 24% to 32%.

Difficult for Reds to go on a winning streak because their starting rotation is still a mess. At least with 3 off days in the final 16, they can skip one of their worst starters a few times.

Cubs have lost 5 straight and Reds now in statistical tie with them. Marlins lost tonight as well.

6-4 over the final 10 gets them to 85-77. I think it’ll take 86 wins.

Connor Phillips was very impressive tonight.
