Sweep of the Angels is a good start!
It sure is, Doug!
In a sorta Reds related news, the White Sox cleaned house on their executive management and then promptly released one time Cincy #1 prospect Billy Hamilton.
After hitting .245 in his MLB time w the Reds, Hamilton has bounced around the league and despite his speed, could never hit well enough to be successful. This year he was mostly playing in Triple A minors with a .147 BA.
Votto to DL, Nick Senzel recalled.
This was 25 days ago. The Reds plan which you described has been a has been a total fail. Lodolo might not be back this season. Gutierrez stopped his rehab . Antone and Lugumina have not been called up. Hunter Greene has made one start and was terrible, he gets another chance this weekend. The two available starters you mentioned, Lynn and Giolito, both have been really good for their new teams.
Here is a move they could have tried at no cost, but Seattle took advantage instead. When the Reds gave up on Luke Weaver, he was picked up by the Mariners for the stretch run as a long reliever. He pitched for them the first time this week and went 2 innings, retired all 6 batters with 5 of them strikeouts. Nice effort by Luke, and the Mariners appear headed for the playoffs.
Although a starter wouldāve been incredibly helpful, I wouldāve rather seen the Reds go after a David Robertson or Aroldis Chapman. The bullpen has been incredibly shaky since the break. I think weād probably have 4-5 more wins had we landed one of those guys.
Although he is incredibly talented, I am starting to sour on Elly. The guy is a gamechanging player with his speed, but the rate at which he continues to strikeout is alarming.
Lynn has been really great, but Giolito has allowed 43 baserunners in 27 innings, a WHIP of 1.59, which is horrible.
Agree with Dick that the Reds shouldāve tried Weaver in the pen as a long reliever, which they donāt currently have. I read that Seattle had him throw his worst fastball (4 seamer) much less often and instead used his cutter much moreā¦something the Reds shouldāve figured out.
Lodoloās gotta be done for the season and I worry about his long term health. I donāt think Greene was as bad as his pitching line indicates. It was 90+ and humid and the ball was flying. He gave up 5 homers and the longest was 368 feetā¦but he didnāt have his usual control. Iām not worried about Hunter.
The pitching AND the hitting hasnāt been good enough over the past 40 games.
Well the Reds announcers mentioned Giolito and R Lopez who they got from the W Sox had been doing well but other than Moustakos all the hitters the Angels added have sucked. So I guess I should have checked the stats myself.
No more excuses for Hunter Greene. He absolutely sucked again tonight, about 90 pitches to get 11 outs. Send him to the minors, the guys we have been bringing up are not good, but they are way better than this guy and give us a better chance to win. He has no command and does not seem like much of a competitor. Bullpen games would be a big improvement.
He was horrible tonight but Iām chalking it up as a guy not ready/fully recovered. I agree, he probably needs some more rehab starts
Yes! I just made this joke to a supposed āforeverā Reds fan and he had no idea what I meant. I love this!!!
The Reds canāt resist starting high $$ players who are playing way sub par.Isnāt that what AAA in Louisville is for?
I agree. Hunter should work out the kinks in Louisville. Not in the big leagues when the Reds are still clawing for a playoff birth.
Welp⦠it was incredibly fun for a few weeks there
Reds do lead MLB with comeback wins. BUT yesterday showed how weak a lot of the bullpen is. Diaz is great.
I donāt think we can underestimate as well the impact of not having Fraley and India the last few weeks or so.
Which coincided with Elly and Benson falling off as well. And Abbott is wearing down.
The discussion was ongoing above. I was opposed to making acquisitions at the trade deadline because, although Iāve never had to experience it, announcers constantly say that rookies tend to wear down at the end of the season if they are playing full time, and our pitchers were likely to be on innings limits meaning the teams would have had to replace a lot of their rotation. We would have just thrown prospects away. This was never the year. If they make it to the playoffs, cool. But next year will hopefully be much better so I have been less worried about not making the playoffs than in the past. Marte has looked awesome, still wish they would have hung on to Castillo though.
Good observations,TheRok.
I think there are around 30 games left. Gonna be tough.
McLain going on the DL is likely the blow that we cannot overcome.
