2023 Cincinnati Reds thread

Disappointing though because the Reds have had many sellout crowds this year and they had money to spend. This management group has always said they would spend more when they made more. Well, they didn’t.

I don’t think the inactivity at the deadline had anything to do with spending money. All indications were that they didn’t want to give up as much in player capital as was being requested.

I woudn’t blame them at all for not adding a position player at the deadlin, positional depth was not really an issue. Trading for someone to be the 4th/5th outfielder was never going to replace Fraley or Benson’s production

I would question more where India/Fraley AB’s are being distributed among the depth that they do have. Senzel has taken up most of India’s AB’s which is fine but most of the outfield AB’s are going to Fairchild. I’d prefer to see CES getting the time at 3B, Stephenson the time at DH, Maile behind the plate and Senzel in the OF.

Senzel has ridiculous right/left splits and is hurting the team playing against righties. I would say he also is our worst defensive option of all the guys who play 3B or a corner OF position, He hits lefties very well and that is when he has helped us. I would play Fairchild ahead of him vs righties. I like his defense.

The Reds agreed, optioning Senzel to AAA today. He’s been awful at the plate this past month. Fairchild in the lineup vs a RHP tonight.

India’s foot injury not healing…won’t be able to run for 2 weeks.

India has plantar fasciitis, a condition I am intimately familiar with as I have had it since June 4. I went through 4 weeks of physical therapy to no avail and now am wearing a boot. It feels like a knife stabbing me in the heel. I have plantar fasciitis inserts in all my shoes to lessen the impact. If you have ever had this, you know why India isn’t playing. It hurts like a son of a bitch.

I have been there. Hurt my left knee in college and also hurt my left ankle. Had knee and ankle surgery and via that and aging, the Achilles tendon got shorter and then I got that. It’s very common and the only way I got rid of mine after a year was rest, then stretching, and it’s a long, deep stretch where you hang your heels off the stairs and then bow down a little that ultimately does the trick. Hurts like crap. I found putting a golf ball on the carpet and rolling my heels over it helped. If you have access to a hot tub that’s big enough to stretch in, that would prolly help a lot as well. All my friends have gotten it but again, we old.

Interesting article on the improvement from Brandon Williamson (since I posted this on the day he’s pitching, he’ll likely get blown up…it’s all my fault):

100% agree. Last time I had it, there were a few days I almost had tears…

I have a cousin who is a PT and she recommended taking a golf ball and rolling it around the bottom of your feet. Hurts like a mother but I think it helped

Did that in PT among many other things, didn’t do a damn thing. My niece is a Dr of Physical Therapy at Strong Hospital, University of Rochester, and her response when I told her was try stretching and “I bet it hurts like hell”. Thanks for the sympathy Amber! (She is a former rugby player at Penn State, won the national title while there.)

So here is a fantasy baseball question. My DL list is full and includes Jonathan India. Pirates SS Cruz ( similar body and skill set to Elly De La Cruz is available as a free agent. He has been out since Late April. Who would be most likely to give my team a boost in September? I could drop India and pick up Cruz right now.

Cruz isn’t playing this season, at least in any meaningful amount. Keep India

If you need a ss, Edman may be available in a 12 (maybe 14) team league. Multi-position and hitting the ball well lately.

Kerry Carpenter is a guy that may also be available although he’s an of. Again, playing well lately.

Julien is eligible at 2b, but he has hit a cold spell with several dnp games.

Edit:
I forgot about Tovar (ss). Decent numbers for a ss and half of his games are at Coors.

It appears to me that the Reds have gone overboard on turning the roster over to the kids. I wonder if any team this inexperienced has ever won anything in MLB. Has such a group ever even made the playoffs. Right now we are looking at an all rookie infield that were all in the minors until at least May. I guess sometimes Votto will start at 1B and Encarnacion-Strand at DH. I think 4 of the 5 current OF’s are rookies, the “veteran” Friedel is a second year guy…The starting rotation down the stretch is 3 second year guys and 2 rookies.

I am rooting for them, but the most likely result of all this is the team’s recent collapse will continue and this great season will fail, hopefully not as badly as last year ended.

Earlier we seemed to have a nice balance of rookies with talent and enthusiasm and a group of veterans. To me it now looks like too much too quickly and I fear a really disappointing end to the year.

I am still watching and hoping, but not liking what I have been seeing.

And, I just read that Lodolo has additional issues so he is probably done for the year. I think Lively is close to coming back. Once again , we painfully see why teams that are serious beef up their roster at the trade deadline. The Reds talked a good game, but when it came right down to it, they did nothing other than add Moll, who has been fine, but they should have added another 3 or 4 guys with experience and actually made an effort to win.

Reds ownership was not wiling to spend the money to be serious about winning. 5-5 in last 10 games and a half game out in WC standings so hope not all lost but playoff chances are very slim.

Big win last night, I stayed up till the end. The threat of Ellie’s speed and then his actual speed got us 3 unearned runs to change the game. Ashcroft with a career high 10 strikeouts.

This is a critical road trip for the Reds. If they can come off the road trip within 3 games of a playoff spot, I think they have a decent shot at postseason because the schedule is more favorable (at least on paper) in September. It will be a fun September if that happens with Miami football, NFL, and the Reds all competing!

Hard to find ways to spend money mid-season.
