Well people were clamoring for innings eaters and bullpen help. So there you go. At least it didn’t cost the Reds a top 15 prospect. Again, I am not so sure standing pat isn’t the best course of action, but this move seems relatively benign. Brewers were active the last few days adding Santana and the 3B yesterday.
He would take a roster spot next year (Votto).
Boyle would be a top 15 prospect for most teams (fwiw Fangraphs had him #21); the Reds system is just extremely deep. Absolutely needed a 2nd LHRP, as Sanmartin is out for the season and the minors have nobody ready. Should Alex Young get injured they’d have been in a world of hurt.
Per Redlegs Nation, Hunter Greene to start his rehab assignment and plans are to activate him on August 17.
Great point. Cowboy brought that up last night in a situation where they could have used a lefthander in the game but had none available.
And except for Sam Moll the Reds didn’t make any moves, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing for a number of reasons.
I hated whatDavid Bell did to Ben Lively last night. He just destroyed his stats last night and that affects his future and his salary. Lively just looked crushed. I understand why Bell left him in, but I think a manager also needs to take care of his pitcher’s stats and his confidence. Thoughts?
I have no idea what happened but a manager caring about a pitcher’s stats should probably never be considered.
Worst start in MLB in 100 years. 13 runs on 13 hits in four innings.
I loved it. Had to punt on that game after the horrid start. Would rather save bullpen arms for these next two very important games.
We before Me
Currently 14-6, Cubbies in the bottom of the 7th. And getting worse.
Good thing they saved Farmer and Sims…: horrible
Last 2 games were disgusting. No excuse for that. Will see how thick or thin the team skin is now.
Looks like the Reds missed a point after touchdown!
And now Lively goes on the DL. Do we have any capable starting pitcher ready on the minors?
The only starter in the minors that’s on the 40 man roster is Brett Kennedy. He was signed out of the independent league and his numbers at Louisville are ok. He made one spot start on July 4 vs Washington allowing 4 runs in 5 innings.
I don’t know if Connor Phillips is ready but he may have to be. The reds #5 prospect, he’s been a strikeout machine but has also struggled with walks and has made just 6 starts in AAA. He was the player to be named later in the Winker/Suarez trade which would make him the third player from that trade to make it to the big league club. To call that deal unpopular at the time would be an understatement. However the results have to date been heavily in the Reds favor.
Some pretty big bumps in the road since the trade deadline (also about when India went down). Think a lot of the rookies are hitting a wall, and the relievers are showing wear and tear from being used so often.
Getting Greene and Lodolo back soon. I’ll feel great about 2024 if they can produce similar velocity and results as late 2022 / early 2023.
Votto has been HR or bust… tho 13 HR in 133 AB is an insane ratio.
Williamson since July 1:
36.2 IP
26 H
12 BB (1.04 WHIP)
35 K
3.19 ERA
With 3 off days coming up, they can go with a 4-man rotation until Greene returns 8/20. Luke Weaver is finding a way to keep getting starts.
1-7 in last 8 games. Ouch
Losing both India and Fraley has hurt quite a bit. One of the main reasons teams add players at the trading deadline is to provide depth for the last two months. Reds chose not to do that and are paying the price. Moll was the only addition and we have lost two regular every day players plus one starting pitcher and now Benson is missing games too.
No surprise that the Reds didn’t spend money
