Willie Fritz staying at Tulane

Willie Fritz was a named connected to the Georgia Tech job, but now he’s staying at Tulane.

Fritz is in his seventh season at Tulane, a program that has traditionally struggled to win. Before Fritz’s arrival, Tulane had just one winning record in its previous 13 seasons. Under Fritz, Tulane has had a winning record three times and reached bowl eligibility four times. Before Fritz coached Tulane to a win in the Cure Bowl in 2018, Tulane hadn’t won a bowl game since 2002.

This year, Tulane is 10-2 and will host the American Athletic Conference title game on Saturday. Tulane hasn’t won a conference title since 1998.

Georgia Tech promotes interim head coach Brent Key to top job after Fritz decides to remain at Tulane.

Reports coming out that Trent Dilfer will be named the new UAB coach. Curious how that sits with the players as they prepare for the bowl game. Tensions seem to be a little high right now in Birmingham.

Indeed they do.

I hope this hiring sends UAB into disarray for at least 2.5 weeks.

I would imagine there will be quite a few UAB kids entering the portal next week

Our motto used to be “play the best, beat the best” but now I will settle for whatever disruptions our opponents may have in aiding our cause!

I recall our mantra under at least several coaches was we’d play anybody anywhere and compete hard.I think we still compete hard but the days of “We want Georgia” are probably over - for now.

There is analysis of the WMU job on The Athletic site today. Here’s an excerpt…the second paragraph is a quote from the Broncos’ AD.

This 5-7 was the program’s first losing season in nine years. Before the Cotton Bowl, Fleck won eight games twice. Lester put WMU in position for bowl games. That should be the floor.

“I think we all need to strive for a culture where we only settle for the best,” Bartholomae said at a news conference this week, according to MLive.com. “Where mediocrity is not acceptable, where we don’t pass by details that can be fixed without immediately fixing them, where we don’t excuse certain behaviors that are not allowing us to reach that championship level.”

UAB watch continues…

I am beginning to think that coaching HS football and being an analyst on ESPN is the best path to getting head coaching jobs in the NFL or college football these days.

I am legitimately stunned at Dilfer. He wasn’t even coaching with the big boys in TN high school football. (The school he coached for is reclassifying next year to play against the top private schools–his success came against lower levels.) At least with Jeff Saturday, in theory all he has to do is let assistants actually run the day-to-day while he’s a general strategist/motivator. Hell, even the Herm Edwards “CEO Coach” model had Herm Edwards’ years of actual NFL coaching experience at the top, and it still failed miserably.

Sometimes, especially in Alabama, the cultural and spiritual compatibility seems to be more important than actual coaching experience. Dilfer fits the Alabama model for that as well as Dabo fits in at Clemson.

This from behind the Black and Red Curtain:

You hand picked the information that makes Lester look better and Chuck worse. Here is what you left out. Lester took over a team which had gone 13-0 before losing to Wisconsin in a New Years Day bowl game. For 6 years his record just kept getting worse. Unlike Chuck. Also, he not only did not win a MAC championship, he did not win a divisional championship. Chuck did win a championship. Lester was easily the most deserving MAC coach to be let go this year.

Forget about all this Lester/Chuck talk…if they ever make movie about Fickell, they’ve got his guy:

Dick, you are not taking me out of context but you are referring to just one post I made on this subject …if you peruse the entire chain you’ll note I specifically noted Chuck’s MAC title vs. Lester having none, and that Lester followed Fleck’s great year (although Fleck poached a couple of WMU players when he departed).
