Yes, it is a club sport at Miami. Miami competes at the highest level of club hockey (ACHA D1), but even that is a long way from NCAA D1.
Now, there are 78 schools that play NCAA D3 women’s hockey, and there is quite a wide range from number 1 to number 78 in talent and ability. I would say Miami and the rest of the teams in the above Top 15 ACHA poll could easily compete evenly with the bottom 20 or 25 of NCAA D3.
Congratulations to the women on another strong weekend!
Speaking of Michigan women’s hockey, back in 2010 Michigan and Michigan State men’s hockey set what remains as the all time attendance record for a hockey game at 104k, playing outdoors at the Big House. Having gone to the trouble of installing an ice rink in the middle of the football stadium, Michigan let a whole bunch of different teams play games there in the week leading up to the game, including the women’s club team, facing off against MSU’s club team which I went to watch. Everyone was allowed on the field to stand up against the boards to watch, and it was a cool experience to be standing in the middle of an essentially empty Michigan Stadium watching the game. Had to look up to see which year that was, a little shocking it’s already been 15 years since then.
Miami beat Eastern Michigan tonight 7-2. Kaylee Awrachow got the win in net for the RedHawks in her first start of the season. With the win, Miami improves to 10-1-1-1 on the season.
Miami goals came from Olivia Lorelli, Lyla Tsu, Mandy Cronin, and two each from Natalie Dolan and Captain Katie McGurn.
Miami lost at Goggin today to Eastern Michigan 5-2. This was somewhat of an upset. Freshman sensation Olivia Lorelli had both goals for Miami, the second on a fabulous pass from Captain Katie McGurn.
Miami lost today at Adrian 2-0. Miami was outshot pretty significantly, and didn’t have much O zone time. Maya Gonzalez is now the only goalie on the roster, and took the loss.
Miami lost yesterday to McKendree 6-1 at Goggin. Katie McGurn with the lone goal. Miami finishes the fall semester on a four game losing streak to fall to 11-5-1-1.
Tonight, Miami returned from its 68 day break in the schedule and posted a 5-2 victory at Goggin over the visiting Lindenwood Lions.
Mandy Cronin and Lyla Tsu scored first period goals to get the RedHawks started, but Lindenwood matched Miami with two power play goals and it was 2-2 at the end of 20 minutes.
Katie McGurn added two goals, one on a deflection on the power play, and one on a break-away where she drew a penalty but still scored. Emma Heinig completed the scoring with a bar-down snipe in the third.
Kaylee Awrachow and Maya Gonzalez split the goaltending duties for Miami in the win.
The same two teams finish their two game series tomorrow at noon at Goggin.
Senior Day! The four seniors, Cailin Schwarzer, Emma Heinig, Maya Gonzalez, and Laura Cogswell, were celebrated before the game.
Miami wins today 5-1 to sweep Lindenwood. Senior Schwarzer had two goals, freshman sensation Olivia Lorelli had a goal and an assist, and Mandy Cronin and Lauren Smith also tallied. Senior Gonzalez got the win in net.
