Where does Brett rank among all-time Miami QBs?

Third in all-time passing yards, second in passing touchdowns, two MAC titles, tremendous leader. His stats are a bit skewed with his six seasons and injuries getting in the way, but still a great dude that is probably on his way to a fine post-Miami career. Curious who people who’ve seen him and the likes of Big Ben, Sherman Smith, and others play ball. Shoutout to Dysert and Hendrix too, I think they would’ve been up there if they had the roster, coaching, and time at Miami that Brett had.

I think if he stayed healthy, he possibly surpasses Dysert. He wasn’t the same QB this year after the big injury. His longevity due to COVID and injuries will certainly cement him as a great RedHawk, but he is certainly behind Ben and I’d put him behind Dysert as far as recent Miami QBs.

Josh Betts get a bad rap as he was following Ben, but he was also a very solid MAC QB. Just due to his longevity as our #1, I think Gabbert slots in front of Betts (also because I think Gabbert pre-injury was a better QB than Betts). Hendrix wasn’t bad, but considering his one season was a 2-10 season with Miami, he’s not really in my pantheon.

I came to Miami the year after Ben, so I have no opinion on earlier QBs

I believeBrett was a member of three teams that made it to the championship and has two rings, but was actually only the winning qb once in his time as last year, we won it with Aveon under center. Doesn’t diminish what he did here. Yanks said it earlier regarding his presence around the other players. I think Aveon prolly got a lot of benefit from that last year during our great run.

I almost started this thread myself. Doesn’t Bath have to be in the conversation, too?

A good conversation starter. Since I am old I would have some different people, starting w Ben. I’ll have to think about this while on the plane back to Detroit.

Smith was QB on a MAC winning team and beat Northwestern. He wasn’t gonna win with his arm but he played really well. Ps, did Brett beat UC last year or was it Aveon? I ask because it’s 2 P5 wins for him. Also, Aveon won a bowl game at North Texas I think.

If I’m correct, Aveon and Brett are not that far apart. I might be wrong though…

Brett was the QB for both UC and the UNT bowl win. He even was the MVP of that bowl game

Also sure aveon was the QB for the NW win, but I wouldn’t attribute that win to a stellar qb performance. Miamis 2 tds came after a blocked punt and a 66 yard run by Mozee

And Sherm Smith was also MVP of the 1974 Tangerine Bowl when we beat Georgia 21-10. Miami ran an option offense so Smith was primarily a runner (and a good one w 711 yards rushing in 74 and 900 yards in 75), although he could throw bullets when required. He was also the QB of our MAC champ and Tangerine Bowl winners of the 1975 season. We beat South Carolina 20-7 in that game.

Later an excellent NFL running back for the Seahawks.

Thanks for the help! I can only remember reruns of Mr. Show. It’s glorious.

Sherman Smoth and Ernie Kellerman were both stud college QBs. Neither played QB in the show but both had long NFL careers.

My memory and some googling this would be my ranking of those from 95 on… and some are more grouped than a true ranking

Great
Ben
Zac Dysert
Mike Bath
Josh Betts (I liked Bath better but I’m aware he benefits from being immediately before rather than after Ben)
Brett Gabbert

Good
Gus Ragland
Austin Boucher
Sam Ricketts
Aveon Smith

Mediocre
Hendrix
Austin Gearing - wish we had seen him play more

Bad
Mike Kokal
Billy Bahl
Daniel Raudabaugh or Captain Overthrow as I like to call him

Wait did they play?
Clay Belton
Drew Kummer
Clay Belton
AJ Mayer

Ernie was QB my freshman year. Left handed could throw it a mile. He was Qb when we beat Purdue at Purdue.

Gabbert made the mullett great again!

Chuck Hauck!

Maybe some type of Miami (NCAA?) record, but in one of his starts, he completed only five passes…Good for 3 TDs and 200 yards! He also ran for another TD.

Two of the TD passes went to Don Treadwell!

The mullet AND the ‘stache.

Honestly, Ben should have his own tier. And that isn’t taking anything away from any of the other guys listed in the “great” category. But it’s the Big Ben tier, a line, and then the great tier.
