The Quest for Qatar

Christian said they didn’t know what it said and as soon as they did they took it down. They qualified for the play in at least so it’s not completely tempting fate

=>No chance lose by 6 goals.

CR may not even play starters for fear of yellow card accumulation making the 9 with yellows ineligible for Oceania play-in game.

Odd FIFA is supposedly allowing the yellow card carry over in that game. It does not seem fair considering CR had to play 14 qualifiers in the OCHO. Meanwhile, New Zealand would only play 5 (or if Solomon Islands 3 games).

Something to watch for today is that if Portugal loses and the Netherlands fails to win, the US will go into tomorrow’s games with a chance of still making it into pot 1 of the draw. Would require a US win and a Mexico loss/draw. That Pefok miss on Thursday could wind up being huge.

=>Pot 2 it is.

=>Costa Rica team pregame kick around.

Several missed opportunities that game. Frustrating, but I think it means something that we’re upset we didn’t win at Mexico.

This Mexico squad remind me of the 2017 USMNT.

US on the road against Costa Rica since the turn of the century: 0 wins, 0 ties, 7 losses, getting outscored 19-3.

So far the US has drawn England and Iran…

England, Iran, and the winner of the Wales/Scotland/Ukraine playoff.

Wales is definitely most likely to come out of that European playoff.

We’re the second best team in the group, but it’s still a fairly tough draw. England isn’t the paper tiger they used to be, and Wales/Iran aren’t pushovers.

Still better than what it could have been. Looking forward to Black Friday vs England!

The US finally managed to qualify for the Olympics after three straight failed attempts. And they did it with a 3-0 road win against Honduras. Feels like the program has really turned a corner.

That was the US under age 20 team that beat Honduras 3 to 0 on the road.

It’s kind of strange that the under 20 team gets the men’s team into the Olympics, although they have now limited the men’s team to under 23 for the Olympics.

It’s a pain to schedule multiple tournaments, especially since clubs aren’t required to release players for youth games. They decided to knock it all out in one tournament this cycle.

That’s huge for the Dominican Republic, who had never qualified for a FIFA or even CONCACAF final tournament before this summer, but now gets to play in both the 2023 U20 world cup and the 2024 olympics by virtue of going on a run in this tournament. It also sucks for Mexico, who now misses both tournaments because of being upset on PKs in the early rounds.

Yes, the Olympics for men is U23, but with 3 spots for those over 23.

Aaron Long starting this game after his performance against Japan is criminal.

But he was so much better today…oh wait, he wasn’t.

=>For those of you looking forward to the USMNT in the WC…

Watch Aaron Long get beat by Brandon Vasquez on FCC’s winning goal. Next time you see Long he will prolly be starting at center back vs. Wales in Qatar. :flushed: :grimacing:
