Scanning the portal

From afar it would appear Miami is having difficulty in the portal re M BB and FB- is it a lack of NIL money and/or other factors? FB definitely could use DL depth, DB depth and at least one more WR. M BB certainly needs rim protector and rebounding help ( I believe we were last in the MAC in rebounding ).Our current M BB roster will not be able to compete with big physical teams. I would be interested of the views of those on this site that are close to M BB and FB coaches as to what is going on with the transfer portal .

I’m very interested to see how the team is filled out with high school grads versus transfers. I know everyone says Miami needs transfers, but I have to wonder if the staff is finding Miami easier to sell to high schoolers

I wouldn’t assume we are having difficulties. Just because talent gets locked in fast doesn’t mean it’s good talent or will work out. We will be A-ok

There are over 1500 D1 basketball players in the portal. Less than 18% have committed anywhere. While not all of them will land at D1 schools, it ignores the D2/NAIA players who will make the move to D1. Of the players listed in this thread who have some social media connection to a coach, most won’t receive an offer. Looking more closely, only two players I’ve seen the staff rally around have committed anywhere - one to DePaul (NJ Benson) and another to Illinois (Jake Davis). The transfer portal is speed dating, but isn’t a race. Yesterday alone 32 D1 players entered, including a 4 star 6’8" forward from Indianapolis who is leaving Arizona State.

On the other hand, Miami has used the portal to land a top 60 recruit at a position of need with 3 years of eligibility. 5 of Miami’s top 6 scorers last season were transfers. Don’t forget the flip side of the portal, Miami has retained their 5 key freshmen. I’m not sure there’s any measure at this point that says Miami has struggled in the portal.

And football is in the same situation - retained most of their key players and has consistently landed impact players in it.

@Digitalhawk - I don’t know that’s the case, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see one or two scholarships used if there’s a summer breakout AAU player. I expected Divine Ugochukwu to be a focus, but Baylor just offered yesterday and he’s from Texas. He has a teammate who’s a 7’0" center that is raw but talented. A few other names have popped up as well.

Noted Jive and others - good points -lets see if patience is a virtue or an enemy - the FB portal has been open for some time and it appears we have very little success - I agree BB a different story- lets do a 30 day check up

It’s gotta happen before June as there’s a lot of summer stuff the team does. Will likely happen fast the next 3 weeks is my guess.

Honestly I was a little concerned that JiveHawk hadn’t responded earlier

I still worry that everything we were doing to be ready for year 3 and we dont have a junior or senior on the roster yet

I’m in the thick of Q2 planning at work and requesting head count for an additional team - my own transfer portal of sorts :joy:

With school in session still (finals week at Miami is May 13th) most visits only happen on the weekends. If you’re recruiting someone with offers from multiple schools, they’ll want to get multiple visits in. I can’t remember if this is a ā€œviolationā€ or not (regardless of if it is, it happens), but if someone is borderline, the staff might bring them in and set up a scrimmage with current players. There are interesting stories of transfers coming in for a visit, playing with the team, and somebody at the same position entering in the transfer portal the next day after they were showed up. Agree with @YellowNumber5 that the next three weeks will be fast and telling.

Hoping this is something good, can’t see any news mention, just an emoji.

Jive’s all over it. I saw that too but it was even too cryptic for me. BTW, Rob Summers used the same emoji tonight with announcement that Mark Mitchell was signing with Mizzou.

Yeah, usually it’s a heads up somebody committed or is announcing. I think it could be Horton, but I don’t have a ton to back that up.
