Reds 2026

=>Someone once said water always finds its level.

Edwin Arroyo has been on a tear in AAA. I wonder how much more they would want to see from him to feel he’s ready. Only the 37 games this year at the AAA level.

Arroyo, Marte, Chavis, and even Hector Rodriquez all should be getting consideration. Larkin gave a very frank assessment of Hayes bat over the weekend. And I tire of Benson as well. And McClain’s lease has to be getting shorter.

On offense (including defensive value, but excluding pitchers) so far this season, the Reds have

Hayes -0.8 WAR
Marte -0.4 WAR
Hinds -0.3 WAR
Friedl -0.3 WAR
Stephenson -0.2 WAR
Trevino -0.2 WAR
Suarez -0.2 WAR
Benson 0.0 WAR

There are a lot of problems on offense. I agree Hayes should be made a defensive replacement. Friedl is having a rough go of it this year as well and should maybe be looking if there is an upgrade available in the system. Catcher is an unexpected weak spot, that you basically have to hope for improvement as there are not reinforcements coming for a year and a half. Suarez has good vibes and has always been hot and cold, so let us hope he has a hot streak coming.

As an aside, the management needs to get better, especially the minor league scouting department. The team had a fire sale and the only player that came from it was the comp pick for losing Nick Castellano becoming Sal Stewart, with Edwin Arroyo being the last hope of anything else being of value. The team traded Castillo, Winker, Suarez, Mahle and a bunch of lower value players and got; Levi Stroudt, Marte, Andrew Moore, Edwin Arroyo, Fraley, Justin Dunn, Brandon Williamson and Chase Petty. Also, during the offseason I was championing the Reds going for Murakami hard, and was shocked at how little he went for contract wise (2 years/ $34 million). The team should have been willing to take a risk and go for more money than that. He would currently be the 2nd most valuable player on the Reds after Elly.

I mentioned more than once, a player the Reds could have traded for, he was being shopped. Alec Burlson of the Cards.

They missed a bunch of opportunities this off-season. I love Geno, but he was not who I was hoping for at the beginning of free agency. A lot of players got shorter deals than expected I assume because of the impending collective bargaining agreement expiration. Burleson would have been great. Okamoto only got 4 years and $65 million and is playing 3B right now while hitting well after a bit of an adjustment period. The team went bargain hunting, and is paying the price.

The Reds are not going to win the division with the offense as it currently stands. If he can play 2nd or 3rd, bring him up.Edwin Arroyo.

And the MLB worst for walks is killing this team as well.

Reds would need a continuation of incredible pitching to offset their terrible batting averages and run scoring deficiencies.

They had it for awhile, but now are moving towards a .500 type team which is what you might expect when you peruse the horrendous batting averages of our typical starting line up.

I’ll type it out for any casual readers who haven’t been paying attention.

BA for Reds’ batters:

Trevino 3/24 .125
Stephenson 19/100 .190
Stewart 39/156 .250
McLain 28/143 .196
Hayes 14/102 .137
Elly 47/164 .287
Friedl 25/137 .182
Steer 33/136 .243
Suarez 21/91 .231

After that, there is a hodgepodge of players they have been mixing and matching with varying degrees of success.

Bleday 11/43 .256
Marte 4/29 .138
Lowe 21/81 .259
Benson 12/63 .190
Myers 12/50 .235
Hinds 4/33 .121

Obviously this doesn’t tell the whole story as some guys are platoon only and if they got more playing time their stats would crater, but from where I stand, Hinds, Benson and Marte should be quickly running out of opportunities. Marte was supposed to man RF and absolutely flopped leaving the team with a big hole in right with no solution in sight. At some point the team will need to try out Hector Rodriguez as well, who continues to hit well in AAA, but who has a terrible batting eye and swings at everything. But looking at the list of players in the OF does not lead to expectations of improvement.

Pretty horrific.

I felt our pitching was not awesome going into this year. Like very average. But the hitting is putrid.

So last night we have Benson who is hitting .188 as the leadoff hitter. A .188 hitter, who also doesn’t get a lot of walks and strikes out a lot, is not a table setter. Mistake #1. Next we have numerous walks again. Mistake #2. Then we have Reds pitchers again walking in runs. Mistake #3. Then we have Myers who can’t execute a bunt in the 9th inning. McClain hits a double to start the inning. All Myers has to do is put the bunt on the ground and McClain moves to third with one out. Instead Myers does the worst thing you can do, and pops the bunt into the air right to the pitcher. Mistake #4. Then Reds give up a 2 run HR in top of 10th, a position they would not be in if Myers could have executed the bunt. As to fan interference, the call was correct, but that ball wasn’t leaving the stadium anyway. Reds are a shit show.

Have NOT followed this SHIT team since the late 90S. i have not missed a thing.

REDS SUCK as always

I believe the Reds are now 4-13 over the last 17 games, the worst such stretch in MLB.

Sigh. They started so well.

Somewhat ironically in patches they have been hitting better overall, but now the pitching has collapsed.
