/Paging Bob Nutting
Reds somehow beat Braves 7-6 behind Cruzâ 30th homer. Hayes goes 0-4 to drop BA to .141.
Of course we did. Thatâs because 75 wins is our yearly curse and we are now at 74. Heck, theyâll prolly sweep!
Stewart still getting hits but his power production has slackened little. Maybe fatigue from a long season.
Iâd put Fisher and Nutting below Castellini (Monfort is down there too), but heâs not far.
Yeah! We win 75 games again! Yeah! We are stuck in franchise purgatory!
Enough
So happy for Tejay Antone. Heâs not getting any press for NL Comeback player of the year but heâs had an awesome year pitching the most innings of his career and putting up solid relief numbers.
Another âsuccessfulâ year for the Reds comes to a close at 75-87. Hopefully Stewart wins ROY. Elly another great year as did Burns. Rest of this team is largely trash. Krall and Castellini should be ashamed of this product year after year. Another smaller market team is leading the majors in wins. If owned and run correctly it can be done.
We tell ourselves the same

I wish. I am closer to giving up on MLB than I have ever been in my lifetime, however. Terrible ownership +terrible management + an economic system favoring big markets makes being a fan not worth the effort. I am hoping that the new collective bargaining agreement brings some extra ability to retain players back to the mix, but with the current leadership in place, I donât think it will make a bit of difference. I have had low expectations of this group ever since they refused to trade players in 2014, then got dismal returns on the 2015 fire sale. Hell, even the Bailey contract was ridiculed at the moment. There have been many head scratchers since that have continued to reinforce my angst.
The Bailey contract was egregious especially since it was a choice to pay an average pitcher instead of Johnny Cueto.
He was an enigma. Could look like an absolute star. Dude threw two no hitters (almost back to back if I recall) but then could have no control and get roughed up for 6 runs in the first inning. So strange.
In retrospect the Bailey contract was a disaster. Even going back to 2013 Cueto was the better pitcher. Donât forget the Reds DID extend Cueto, buying out 2 years of free agency after his 3rd season (2010). At the time of Homerâs contract though, Bailey was only 27, had been injury free, and was getting better every year, culminating in a dominant 2013 season (1.12 WHIP, 8.6 K/9, and 4.1 fWAR). Who wouldâve guessed Bailey would be injured for 5 consecutive years after signing.
Baileyâs 2012 playoff start vs the Giants may have been the most dominant postseason start in Reds history.
I didnât intend to make this a Bailey contract discussion, was just using that as an example of the poor moves the team has made since this management team took charge. I was opposed to that contract the second it was announced. Through 5 partial seasons, he had 0.3 WAR. Then had two slightly above average seasons with an ERA+ of 108 and 112 (100 being a league average pitcher). But the reason I didnât personally like the signing is because Homer Bailey didnât seem to love baseball. Interviews about his offseason plans always revolved around hunting and fishing and not training. He seemed like a classic get the money and quit kind of guy. Now, who knows, injuries derailed his career so I could have been wrong and he just didnât get the chance to show me. But secondly, the Reds never had the financial ability to keep that team together, and rather than flipping those players, they tried to make one last run with them and ended up getting nothing of value from any of them. The best trade return they got was when they traded Alfredo Simon the following year for Castillo. There are plenty more examples of obviously poor decisions from the management, I will list them if anybody wants.
