Another thing Klatt said he noticed in LV was lots of pressure on ND to pick a conference - presumably the Big 10 - and join it. You are probably onto something. The Big 10 and SEC will probably cherry pick several teams from the ACC and Big 12 and then boot the remnants down to G6 status.
Futuristically, this may be a good thing. Pitt, NC State, Houston, Miami OH, Purdue, Northwestern, Iowa State, Southern Miss, Temple, BC, UNLV, (* insert-non-powerhouse-team-here *) simply cannot compete financially against Ohio State, Michigan, ND, Texas, Penn State.
So, come to an agreement, let the minor-league NFL teams form their own charged-up “College” football super-conference where they only play each other, spend and get boo-koo bucks from a LIV-type sponsor and TV rights, and let the smaller teams forge their own schedules on a regional basis. Miami playing in a UC, Louisville, Purdue, Illinois, Northwestern, Pitt, WVa, Marshall, BGSU(cks), and a Houston, Tulsa, Ok State, Baylor, UNT, Tulane … seems to make sense, but who knows?
It’s a business. The idea of a super-conference seems to be pretty likely, and then the fur flies and the dust ultimately settles.
Where are the service academies?
Obviously with us.
JMU vs Tulane in the national championship would be the greatest thing in the history of college football.
I just asked as they were not on the hypothetical 80 chart.
NCAA just needs to off load the SEC and B?
I’m fine with that as long as we hang with the ACC, BIG10, MWC, PAC, American, …,
But, I still think it is completely out of control, and even within the BIG and SEC, programs cannot compete year in and year out with the elite programs like OSU, MICH, Oregon, Bama, Georgia, etc. There are about 20 schools that are in their own universe and a few years ago, I never would have put Indiana on the list.
Agree with this…it’s getting beyond ridiculous for schools in the B10 like Purdue, etc. and as you pointed out, there are many P4 programs in the same position.
They won’t be again after they need to be build and the big boys make sure they don’t get Heisman QBs.
Cignetti got the financial commitments to keep them there. Indiana’s NIL budget this season was on par with Michigan and Penn State. Only OSU spent more than that group in the B1G.
BTW, if you were wondering how JMU is trying to keep up, it sounds like a big part of the answer is soaking the students even more than MACTION does. Their mandatory fee toward intercollegiate athletics is over $3000 per year.
I wonder if they get in free to JMU games?
Tickets are free for JMU students but have to be reserved in advance. And you can only reserve for one game at a time.
What kind of amazes me is that any school in either of the two big dick conferences have student activity fees used to pay for NCAA athletics. Auburn at $1300+. Life as a football or basketball player can be/is be pretty amazing at the big schools.. Get on YouTube some time and search “college athletes dining hall or college athletes facilities.” It’s a good life if you can make it on the team. Beats the hell out of Dennisons Dining hall. I’ve been out since late 70’s (old guy). Wonder what it’s like for Miami athletes today? Freshman year (‘74) fb training table was only for after practice and it was same food for most part that was served in dorms but unlimited refills on the main dish. Breakfast and lunch for players was at the dorm and unlimited.

These people are actually no fun losers
Everything I’ve ever heard from Joel Klatt suggests to me that he’ll eventually be a good subject for CTE research.
A public university with a meager 157M endowment, but I’m sure the CFP appearance is going Flutie Effect them up into being a peer of Berkeley.
I’ve heard a lot of things about March Madness over the years. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say “We don’t want to see upsets.”
Klatt is a moron.
That is one of the best parts of the tourney–5 vs 12 upsets. Sweet 16 “Cinderellas”.
G-d forbid the power guys make ANY concession to the “lesser” conferences.
F ‘em! Repeatedly, with a rusty crow bar!
