Postseason?

What was the amount we paid Bethany and Defiance to come to Miami?

Bethany - $3000
Defiance - $4500

Sacred Heart - $80,000
UMES - $80,000

Yes, we can schedule 1 for 1s. But we need home games, so buying a Defiance and saving 75k allows us to schedule those 1 for 1s. Remember, every 1 for 1 we schedule is us giving up a possible 80-100k we could get for being paid to go somewhere.

I’m sure we could at least cut one of these Non D1. Playing two provides minimal benefit

The issue here is that we have been scheduling to get more home games than road games and to try to get a winning record. This year it finally worked. We got our two D3 wins, we won our two buy games over lower D1, we played in a tournament with two neutral court game against opponents from lower level mid major conferences and we won those games. That gave us a 6-0 start.

Now we are in the position of having a strong team returning, so we need to carefully schedule some teams which will enhance our power ranking, which was not really that important before . The two Sun Belt games were the best thing on our schedule, games we won which enhanced our rankings. The easiest area where we could improve schedule strength is to get into a 3 game tournament with some power conference or good G5 competition at a neutral site. You could also look for teams in our situation who are strong teams and schedule some home and home series. Of course we would love to get a home and home with any Power conference school or with UC, UD, or X.

Very good points. I think replacing one of the NON D1 home games with a pay day road game makes sense.

I would say Miami is probably 3 more years of a winning record before we get UD or X to look at scheduling us again. Or at the same time, they may not want to risk the loss either as we get better now.

Does anyone actually know what our posture was regarding a post season tournament this season or is this discussion pure speculation?

If we wanted to go to the post season, I would imagine Kent’s selection for the NIT over us would certainly rankle Miami officials. Has there been any reaction that we know of?

Seems like radio silence.

We were not interested in pursuing a pay tournament but could have participated if we wanted (CBI) and were not invited to the NIT or Crown (Crown was never an option).

TBH even as a fan who left the arena in a glass case of emotion, I could not get up for a JV tournament. Can’t imagine what the players are still feeling. And now we get to play the “we were robbed” card.

It’s more important to figure out how to keep most of these guys anyway.

Fuck Kent.

I’m of a similar mind. I would have loved one last ride with these guys, especially in the landscape where we just don’t know what the team will be next year, but I find it hard to get too fired up about an NIT snub. It’d also be a pretty sad/pathetic look for our staff to go out and grumble about an NIT snub.

I also think getting a look from the NIT should be the last thing on Steele’s mind when building our schedule for next year. As he said several times, the only goal is the NCAAs. Build the schedule you think we need with the resources we have. The MAC won’t get an at-large so if saving money to spend elsewhere makes the most sense, sure, I’ll watch us blow out a fake school by 90.

So much for not looking sad and grumbling:

Way to go, David!

Never go quietly into the dark night. Rage against the machine.

The meek lose players to the portal!

Agree. I don’t think righteous indignation is whining.
Taking Kent over us is a kick in the teeth, and after our gritty THIRD win over them in the MAC tourney, almost indefensible.

The MAC needs to work to be a multi-bid league for the NCAAs. The MWC is our peer in college football. For BB, they have 4 in the NCAAs this year, and they are the only non-power league outside P4 and Big East. The MAC has very good basketball. We just need to win the OOC more and schedule up. If the MWC can do it, we can too.

We got totally screwed over by the NIT committee, but the reality of it is, the NIT is getting worse and worse (and not that great any longer) as the Crown takes all the power league teams not invited to the NCAAs and as teams are declining bids to recruit for the portal. This all just benefits the P4. Who reallly wants to watch the NCAAs with almost 25% of the teams from one conference (SEC)? Also, it is such a joke when teams with major losing records get invites to some of these post season tourneys. Forget the CBI/CIT…

Here is something similar of interest. In the women’s post season last year they added the WBIT which is now the #2 tournament and still have the WNIT, which is a pay to play and all games are on home courts. Many times MAC women’s teams have had deep runs and Toledo won it once.

Anyway, BallState is in the NCAA, Toledo is in the WBIT and is hosting Washington. Buffalo and Miami are in the WNIT with matchups to be announced today. Kent is not in any of these. Kent had a higher NET than we did, Kent was the 4 seed, we were the three seed, and they beat us in the tournament to go 2-1 against us during the season. Now I think our record and NET were good enough to earn a WNIT spot, but why isn’t Kent also in?

Just the opposite of the men.

How does this look for recruiting? “Come to the MAC, where a school can set a program record for wins, lose in the conference championship game, and not get a bid anywhere!”

Can we trade?

That’s kinda my take on it.

What a horrible thing!

Despite finishing second to Akron in the MAC regular season, and three games ahead of 3rd place Kent, and losing the MAC Tournament Championship Game to Akron by a last second shot, and beating Kent three times this year (twice in the regular season and once in the tournament semis), the NIT invites Kent over Miami!?!?!

Un-f’n-believable!

Outrageous!!

Bad enough that the MAC really deserved two invites to the NCAA Tournament, but completely ignoring Miami by picking a team it beat three times is ridiculous!!
