Postseason?

I am not even sure what all post season exists but it seems like besides the NCAA there is a 32 team NIT, a 16 team CBC (crown on fox) and a 16 team CBI.

I think the Crown is for major conference teama primarily

The cbi is now a 16 team tournament all in one location that is streamed on flo sports until the final 4 which is on espnu and final espn2. Wiki says 7 teams have already accepted all mid- major types including Cleveland State

I thought I heard Steele once say the CBI wasnt real postseason

Steele said his standard is NCAA and perhaps NIT only if the guys on the team wanted it if invited. Based on past NIT invite process, I doubt Miami is getting an invite to NIT.

The CBI charges an entry fee on top of the travel costs down to Florida. I think it’s telling that schools buy their way in even while conference tournaments are going on. Army is going, and they’re 16-15 on the season.

This site has a decent recap. The Crown has 2 auto-bids for the Big Ten/Big 12/Big East each with the remaining 10 filled by their committee. NIT has 16 autobids (2 ACC/SEC each, the top 12 remaining non-tourney teams from the top 12 KenPom conferences) with their first round home games guaranteed; teams with an average ranking of 125 or better across seven metrics are also granted an auto-bid on top of that before committee picks the remaining teams. We’re not projected in this guy’s list, if correct thankfully 16-17 USC will grace the NIT with its presence instead.

Steele said in his presser last night that he wasn’t sure if the season was over or not. Since the NIT is not going to pick us, that leaves the CBI.

The CBI would be similar to the MAC tournament in terms of competition. But the CBI schedule is brutal - 4 games in 4 or 5 days.

Huh.
I’m near Daytona, so I’d attend if Miami goes there.

I’m not ready to write off the NIT yet. That site for example has UAB, Arkansas State, and UNLV (who just fired their coach) as some of last ones in. We are in the mix with those teams.

I’m thinking NIT for regional purposes, maybe the following:

Miami vs Dayton - Now Dayton is hosting the first 4 at UD Arena and then the boys state championships, so UD has an agreement if they make the NIT as a host school, they have to play on the road. This would put UD at Miami on a Wednesday night, or possibly Tuesday.

Miami vs Ohio State - Game would be a rematch of the 1993 NIT win by Miami at St. John’s. Except this time the game is at Cheap City Furniture Arena.

Steele said he would not consider CBI so that’s out. I doubt NIT picks Miami and even if it did invite I would question whether or not the team would accept. The goal was NCAA. The emotional tank has to be at empty after last night and to turn around and play a 2nd tier tourney in 2-3 days is asking a lot. Not to mention the portal opens up in 8 days and there are likely a lot of discussions and decisions to be made between players and coaches between now and then. And we know Suder has an injury that he gutted through and likely others have some nagging issues that may require some medical attention and they played through those with NCAA on the line–for NIT or CBI not so much. Not to mention playing in those types of tourneys is a money loser for the program/school from what I was told by those in the know last night at the game. Its been a nine month grind and I can’t imaging there’s much juice left in the tank for a non-NCAA tourney.

I hope we would accept an NIT bid. Even if Suder cant go that would be a great experience. I would understand not wanting to go to the CBI

I hate the idea of not going to a tournament so that our players can think more about the portal.

When is the portal open and close periods. I might need to avoid the internet for those six weeks

Portal opens up in 8 days.
At some point its time to call it a season–its not about what we as fans want, its about best interests of the players/coaches. Similar to football teams/players opting out of meaningless exhibition bowl games. I think we as fans vastly underestimate the physical and mental grind that the players go through. They went balls to the wall the past three days to try and reach their goal and came up just short. They are spent

I think all of us here will be fine with whatever the team wants. I’m sure if you asked the team after the game last night if they’d want a meaningless tournament invite, they’d 100% say no way. Ask them this morning and again probably a ā€˜no thanks’. But maybe by this evening they would change their mind and want to suit up with these teammates at least 1 more time, even if it’s a game vs Cleveland State. With a team that is as connected as this group (and knowing that there will be several players leaving before next season), it’s gotta be tearing them up inside that it’s over.

I’m all for what the players want to do. If they want to keep playing, cool. Tell me the time and day and I’ll be watching. But if they say that they’ve emptied the tank and that’s it for the season, I totally understand that. The 2005 NIT loss and the 2008 CBI loss were examples of teams going all out for March Madness, falling short, and not being healthy and/or interested in consolation games. And I have no beef with that. As a competitor, once the primary goal is gone, of course you’re not going to have the same edge.

If we somehow got an NIT invite, I’d be pretty surprised if we did not accept that…

Dudis, your post on the NIT brought back memories of our only deep run in that tournament back in the early 90’s IIRC. We won two games including beating Ohio State.in Columbus. (and for a shot at beating a school like that I think the NIT is a worthwhile tournament for us if invited).

We lost in the round of 8 left to Georgetown. Their Arena wasn’t a available so instead of letting Miami host (as the selection committee wanted Eastern Power programs to be in the final four at the Garden, they switched the game to another college campus (I wanna say it was The George Mason University), before a sparse crowd (had we hosted,.Millet would have been packed), and lost. But it was pretty exciting to see us go that far and almost make it to NY.

Footnote: looked up the game after my post…it was 1993, and after beating OSU, we beat Old Dominion in the second round.

Yes, that was my senior year and an exciting run. A few buddies and I packed into small car and drove to Columbus for the game. St. John arena crowd was stunned and the chants of ā€œWe are MU!ā€ echoed through the arena as the game wound down. I played in the band at the ODU game. They brought their band too and it was a great atmosphere. We all thought for a brief moment that we would be hosting Georgetown (with John Thompson and not too far removed from their glory days with Ewing etc.) as you mentioned. That would have been amazing.

Thoroughly enjoyed the season. Attended 11 games, more than I’ve seen in the last 10 years. Best Miami ā€œteamā€ since 1977-78 squad with Aldridge, Ayers and Shoemaker that beat Marquette in the NCAA’s. It’s a shame we will likely not have a post season; I hope that doesn’t discourage any player from returning, would love to see them all come back. Steele did a fantastic job coaching and spreading out the minutes. Congratulations to all for a great season.

NIT will unfold in the next hour. Rutgers apparently opted out…UNC and X both made the Dayton play-in.

I remember years ago ESPNU used to hold the NIT selection show. They started one year with the NIT selection commissioner and asked him how much work went into it and his answer was ā€œWell, we watched the NCAA selection show, took the remaining teams, and we were done in about half an hour.ā€

Way to bury your own committee’s work.
