What planet are you from?
Planet Pittsburgh, Yins! Obviously!
As a lifelong Cincinnatian, I found myself rooting for the Steelers for one and only one reason, Miamiās Big Ben was their QB. Now that Ben has retired, any allegiance to the Steelers retired with it.
Go Bengals!
On the other hand I became a Steelers fan the day Ben got drafted. After rooting for them for 18 years I was hooked for life. Thinking about rooting for Rodgers makes me feel sick; I may skip this season.
What drama, though? Other than being old and not that good anymore, heās a very unremarkable 40+ year old QBā¦.
Like you, I followed Pittsburgh when Ben was there. No reason any longer. Seahawks fan since 1977. Sherman Smith moved into my apartment complex after they drafted him.
Obviously you are tired of Tomlin, who if he retires today is a sure fire HOF coach. You seem to blame him for all kinds of decisions made by the front office. The things you complain about are almost always responsibilities of management. They assemble the personnel. How much influence Tomlin has on their choices is a bit of an unknown. Probably more influence of selecting the assistants than the players. Management always has the final say. It seems to me that anything front office or Tomlin does that you do not approve of you blame Tomlin for.
The Steelers are in a rut of being good enough to be fighting for a playoff spot every season and getting winning records every season. Since Ben retired they have continued that instead of retooling. In order to get back to their great seasons they need to acquire a franchise QB. To me they should be trading off talent for draft picks and acquiring cap space, accepting a couple of poor seasons to acquire assets. It is kind of neat that they have not had a losing season since they drafted Ben, but it is management who has to decide they want to accept a few bad teams to get great again. Getting a 41 year old who looks to be well past his prime will likely make the Steelers competitive again, but is once again putting off how long it is likely to take to get back to the top.
I think you understate how much of an influence Tomlin has on that team. In 20 years of coaching, he has yet to hire anyone young and remotely innovative as an OC or DC. He is the very definition of mediocrity.
@MUHawk0810 No, Rodgers doesnāt bring any drama. Not if you overlook his anti-vaccine rants, his pilgrimage to Egypt while his teammates are practicing, the darkness room retreat, the psychedelic drug use and the countless conspiracy theories he espouses. All completely normal.
Eh, I suppose it depends on what you define as drama
And the weekly McAfee spots where he blames everyone but himself for everything but sure great guy.
Lotta Pittsburgh seems to be showing up in this thread! lol Rogers def qualifies as a controversial and possibly even decisive dude in my book. But maybe heāll fit in well in the Steel City. Hoping the Steelers qualify for a high draft choice!
I donāt think Tomlin has any fans left in Pittsburgh. Only ones seem to be the SportsCenter watchersā¦.
In fairness, Rodgers did not win a Tony last night.
191-118-2ā¦Tomlinās career record with the Steelers. How many current and former NFL coaches would take that record? I sure would.
I guess it comes down to fans willing to put up with a coach who fluctuates between dog shit years and an occasional insanely hot run with a Super Bowl and a career log of somewhere in the 35-45% win ratio
Heās 12th all-time for wins by an NFL head coach and 25th for winning percentage. But heās 13th for winning percentage among coaches who had ten or more seasons at the helm.
And he hasnāt won a playoff game in 9 years. In fact, has only won 3 playoff games since the teamās last Super Bowl appearance almost 15 years ago.And the Bengals basically gave them one of those. A lot of ānon-losingā seasons that were also mediocre seasons. Stability can be important, but change sometimes is appropriate.
Of course, it appears there are mental issues. But two things are certain:
On the field, he was a great player (in his prime).
Heās a dumba**.
Might be CTE too.
Probably.
