ESPN sources: Steelers star TJ Watt has become the highest-paid non-QB in NFL history for the second time in his illustrious career, reaching agreement today on a three-year, $123 million extension that includes $108M fully guaranteed at signing.
Good news. Glad the Steelers didn’t go four years. Hopefully Watt can stay at the top of his game for the contract. Herbig and Sawyer should be able to give him some rest.
So they waited all this time and ended up giving him the highest salary ever. Steelers need to have him but to me they could have gotten a better deal than this by making better and friendlier offers earlier in the year. Biggest contract ever for a non QB.
Technically, isn’t it a four-year contract for $144 million? Didn’t they just tear up this year’s and have him sign a four-year deal starting this year? That would mean the average salary is less than 40 million a year. Unless I’m misunderstanding things and at my age I do that sometimes. I was not in favor of it anyway. Not at his age.

Moments ago, he was carted off the field with a knee injury.

There were a lot of crazily dressed Steelers fans on my NJ Transit train from New Brunswick to EWR this morning.
Alex Highsmith played at Hoggard HS here in Wilmington, NC. His only offers out of high school were from Furman and non-scholarship Davidson. He decided to take an invited Walk on offer at Charlotte instead.

The Jets punted twice today. Against the vaunted historical Steelers defense. I said it before and I’ll say it again they should have played more in the preseason so they could get their act together. Especially with a lot of new guys. I’ll take the win but you can’t be real confident against the good teams.
