Oxford Restaurant Recommendations

I am so boring…when I am in Oxford I most always eat at Skyline.

Tried Pickle and Pig yesterday. Outstanding. Prices are very reasonable for a more upscale restaurant, too.

Ox- Vegas Chicken

Gaslight

Paesano’s

How’s Steinkeller? All of these years of going to weekend games it’s always escaped me to give it a shot.

In theory I should love a place that serves German food and beer.

Gotta agree with ya, Dick.

It was good. They have a smaller than I remember German menu and a standard American food menu. I think there were more German dishes on the menu when I last ate there in 2016.

I had the Holsteiner Schnitzel and my lady had the Wurtz Platter. Both were large servings and quite tasty. Here’s a pic of their taps of German and Austrian beer options. Coming off two long drives and a day at Keeneland we both had the full liter stein while we relaxed at the bar and waited for a table. It takes two hands to lift one when it’s full.

The original menu was larger, but they have changed chefs several times. Also, it was started and owned by Todd Holenbaugh (? spelling) class of 1973. However Todd passed away several years ago and it was taken over by his wife, who has since turned over management to their son.

They also own Mac & Joe’s and the Circle Bar in the alley.

Todd’s first business in town was SDS pizza. I was a delivery driver in 1989 when when the really cute manager asked me out(sexual harassment?). Our second date was Todd and Jill’s wedding and we have now been married 25 years!

When Todd wanted to open Steinkeller there were no Oxford liquor licenses available. If you know Todd the idea of a German restaurant without beer would have been morally unacceptable as well as a non-starter for business reasons. Ever the creative businessman he found a work around. He had a corridor built between Steinkeller and the Circle Bar enabling him to use his existing Circle license.

It’s good, they have a steak special on Wednesdays which is a good deal (although the steak isn’t amazing) and a schnitzel special on Thursdays (I think) which is a better deal and their schnitzel is much better than their steak.

Does Accordion Dave still jam out at Stein’s on Thursdays?

It was from a barstool at Steinkeller that I watched Ron Artest and friends venture into the Pistons crowd to fk up some fans. The sound wasn’t on which made it even more surreal. I’m sure I had schnitzel and a dozen Spatens too.

While I loved that bar (and food), that is by far the most indelible memory.

The owner, Todd Hollenbaugh, would go to Munich every year for Octoberfest. As a major American retailer of a number of the German breweries products he was given the royal treatment. A number of years he asked me to join the crew making the trip and I never did, always thinking that I could just do it “next year”.

Of course Todd’s passing has eliminated that option. A cautionary tale for us all. There is no guarantee of “next year”.
