For the elite players (projected high draft picks), some could get Loss of Value insurance. It is extremely expensive. Lloyds of London used to do this. I’m sure there are others.
I just wish the teams that got to the bowls actually played in the bowls. With so many portal transfers and people sitting out because they are afraid of injuries, it’s sometimes completely different.
At some point, I think the schools should have some type of recourse to get back some type of compensation for students that skip a bowl game, especially if they eventually get “employee” status…
I think it would be interesting if a very litigious person decided to sue the NCAA for something like bait and switch. Think about it. For the big bowl games you might be be paying $500 a ticket and you probably are paying for flight and lodging. That might be significant if the team you are going to see has 3-5 of their best players out of the lineup. It seems like it would get the attention of someone quickly.
If anyone’s going to do this, please tell your lawyers to give me a cut of the action. ![]()
Read this article if you get a chance. It’s pretty great. And, MU gets a shout out.
I mean, at some point there’s going to be an enforced expectation for these kids to play an entire season if healthy.
Great article. And yea…Nice to see the Miami mention.
I sometimes wonder how MU’s fortunes would have been if every famous MU sports alum’s kid had come to Oxford. Can’t fault the kids for going big time of course. I just wish they would put MU on their “consideration” list even if ceremonial as it would get us others to look.
If student-athletes were employees of the universities, then they could sign employee contracts that contain provisions for if they sat out of games, like pro athletes.
Under any other circumstance, it’s silly to say the athletes owe the university if they decline to play in a game.
I’m watching the Oklahoma FSU game and the FSU NIL booster group bought an ad encouraging people to donate so they can create more great moments like this. The Cheezit Bowl. Also, that talking cheese character is terrible creative.
Another Miami alum cheers for the Washington Huskies. Maria was active in the Miami Alumni Chapter I founded in Seattle in 1976. We sat together at the luncheon we held at Salty’s for Randy Walker. Oddly, Maria was my rep in the Washington Legislature, my Congresswoman and ultimately my US Senator. I visited her a couple of times at her DC offices on my business trips back east.
If I’m hearing you correct (and I think I am) just as I have a friend in the diamond business (Tom Shane) you have one in the political game. Niiice!
Also, those Tom Shane ads run so much, I’m sort shocked he and Jared haven’t created a diamond bowl. Seems like it would be great for a crossover audience (more women). Bowl sponsorship is kinda fascinating. Bad boy mowers. You buy one mower and it likely lasts ten or more years. And that assumes you cut your own grass. Limited demographic. But jewelry…loads of people want it and you could buy someone jewelry every year. I really don’t understand it at all.
The Diamond Bowl was once the name used for the 1AA Championship game. I attended one - Between Georgia Southern and Arkansas State - in the Tacoma Dome.
Interesting! I’m surprised that went away. Makes too much sense as a sponsorship IMO
Sue the NCAA for what? The players decide whether or not they’re going to play or sit or transfer.
Edit: that said, the idea of some Texas fan suing Bijan Robinson for not wanting to risk his NFL career in the Alamo Bowl is very funny to me.
I was just thinking someone could argue they had an expectation to see a certain team makeup when they purchased their bowl package and due to transfers and opt outs, what they get isn’t that. I’m not saying I’m suing, just I could see someone bringing a suit. ![]()
Reading it from a player who went thru the whole process and having his mom guide him along, this is what College Football is about.
I wonder if he still follows MIAMI football?
Lip reading the Pitt coach: “First fucking down!”
Both sides pretty fired up for this John Hancock Sun Bowl.
Has my attorney been talking to you? ![]()
The blue hairs inside Millett Hall demand that that coach be fired!
