All good!
Steele said he blew the Ipsaro foul - didnât know he had four. Said he should have subbed for him before the foul. Ipsaro was Purity player of the game.
Never apologize for winning but that was somewhat unsatisfying for me. We were fortunate to win given their best shooters missed open looks from 3 and were only 2/8 from 3 for the game. We were outscored 13-2 on points off turnovers, 12-5 on transition and 28-22 in the paint against a smaller team. We didnât take advantage of our bigs, just 8 combined shots for Woolfolk and Potter. Except for Ipsaro, we didnât finish consistently enough at the basket. And our transition defense still isnât good. With the depth that we have, we shouldnât be getting beat in transition.
And we do have depth. Our 9th guy had 9 points, 3 boards, and 2 assists. More importantly, Skaljac played good defense and only had 1 turnover.
Besides Ipsaroâs grit down the stretch on offense, what won the game were our good hands defensively, especially around the basket. In half-court defensive situations, we were quick to the ball, we did a good job challenging shots, and we rebounded well. Elmer was quiet offensively, but he rebounded really well tonight. I didnât understand the double teams against their post guy. Again, we were lucky they missed so many open shots.
Kudos to Potter for playing through his back. He played his guts out. Ipsaro, what else can you say. I thought he was the best player on his HS team as a sophomore and had more D-1 potential than Rylee did and heâs more than showed it. Paveletzke couldnât stay in front of him and he did a good job driving him repeatedly.
Congrats to the team for winning a game they couldnât afford to lose: big crowd against an undermanned rival. But thereâs plenty of work to do, starting Tuesday in what will be a pretty dead environment in Mt. Pleasant.
When we have a home football game they make the students remove their cars for Game Day. Somebody screwed up by not doing that todayâŚBecome a womenâs fan and you would have had your choice of hundreds of spots.
As you know, I very much respect your knowledge as itâs clear you have spent a long time around hoops. As such, I feel validated to see you call out our depth as well as some of the talent like Evan and young Skywalker. We wouldnât have won today without them. Evan is bullets. Skywalker has crazy upside and heâs getting a lot of time as a freshman. Your other comments are all thorough. OU is a tough out as theyâve been good for a long time so I take the victory with great pride in what the team and coaches have done in a relatively short amount of time.
Ipsaro is a warrior with a combat mentality. He means so much to this team.
Not choking down the stretch and puking that one up is the best thing that could have happened for the continuing engagement of the student body. A last minute loss after leading by 14 would have been like Lucy pulling the football on Charlie Brown.
Letâs kick their ass at the Convo and make them take solace for a bunch of two-toothed kitties who have nothing better to do.
They were having to pull the tarps off of some sections after the game had started so that people would have places to sit.
I only know Eugene Seals from the MHT memes and didnât realize that heâd actually played here and was in good standing. Iâd always assumed it was a Dwain Williams or Ricky Stanzi situation. I almost did a double take when they called the name out during the alumni section.
Mike Ensminger was also in the house @thechuck_2112
Mike Wren or anyone from the 69-71 teams there?
When Eugene (from Saginaw, Mi) played for Miami, a rumor surfaced that he was going to transfer to Michigan State. Both of his parents graduated from Michigan and his Dad graduated from the Michigan State Medical School. Mrs. Seals was also the mayor of Saginaw for a bit.
AnyhowâŚI was quite curious so I simply called his Mom and asked her! We ended up speaking several times over the years. Eugene actually was considering transferring but ultimately stayed.
As Eugene explained:
" I actually had classes and a roommate at MSU. They played more my style of ball. I just decided to stay at Miami because my mother was battling cancer at the time which did not leave my family with money to pay for my schooling."
Eugene was a great athlete and excellent defender.
Funny story- I was a rather small kid as a teen, and in my freshman year at Miami while at a game, MU event staff asked me if I wanted to be one of the âkidsâ who welcomed the players during their introductions before the game. Seals was the player who handed me a T-shirt.
To be fair, there were a lot of empty seats, the parking lot was full at 2:30pm and the womenâs game was still going on. Folks were still walking in near 4pm. I saw some people moving the covers on the seats so they could sit. Behind me and around me in the East stands, there were rows only 10%-20% full.
Was the parking lot completely cleared of student cars before the games? I left Millett around 6pm and there were still a lot of cars but only autograph seekers inside and some former basketball players still chatting. Those remaining were not enough people to keep the lot as full as it still was.
No, the students evidently were not told to remove their cars from the parking lot like they do for football games. Hopefully they will rectify that for the Love, Honor, Care double header on the 22nd. Grumpy and I were eating at Left Field Tavern before the womenâs game and I asked him if someone had thought about clearing the cars out of West Millett and he said âyou think?â and we both started laughing.
Mike Wren And Ray Loucks.
Going back to the start of the 2009-10 season Miami basketball has had one winning season, the COVID-shortened 2020-21 when they finished 12-11.
The win yesterday guaranteed a winning regular season with 10(!) games left to play.
Enjoy the ride!
We figured traffic/parking would be rough. We parked on the street on S Main, walked to Millett, then walked uptown for dinner, then walked to Goggin for hockey, and a short walk back to our car. Got a few steps in, but no traffic/parking issues.
Apparently they didnt have to move cars. In addition my son (who lives in Porter) went to his first basketball home game as a student and they drove
