Now that loyal Hawktalkers have clearly reached a consensus (feels like > 90%) that the CM era needs to come to an end, I wanted to create a dedicated place outside of game threads to discuss the what we are hoping to find in our next head coach. Name dropping encouraged. Perhaps some who are more in-the-know can also shed light on legitimate candidates.
Let’s try our best (I know it’s very difficult) to keep Chuck bashing out of this one and keep it focused.
A name that always comes to mind for me is Deland. The knock would be lack of head coaching experience.
The pros:
tons of positional coaching experience at different levels (high level P4, NFL) - would expect he has an impressive network of connections for assembling a staff
Was reportedly a finalist for the OU job last cycle, putting some external credence in him as a truly strong candidate and not just a homer pick
Miami Man
The intangibles - young (relatively), energetic, with an amazing personal story - would expect buzz around the program (and likely attendance) to shoot up
The Nebraska DC and either of the UCLA coordinators would be potential options.
If we’re looking for something more in the family, Bronowski is having another great special teams season with Auburn and Nowinsky is averaging like 10 ppg allowed for a top 25 New Mexico team.
Deland is a good name to add to the list. Personally, I wouldn’t mind trying to steal away WMU’s HC coach. I know we can’t or won’t, but he would be on my list.
I’m ambivalent on whether we get someone with head coaching experience or not, we’ve had some great recent hires with (Steele) and without (Box, Smiley). Thankfully Sayler has gotten into a groove in making these choices since he’s stopped using search firms.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we looked to get a high-end FCS coach with a lot of returning starters who can transfer in. A coaching transition is perilous enough, getting someone with a proven track record of winning and managing a modern college program with dudes who know his system makes sense on paper.
Has Deland ever even been an OC anywhere? Not sure how a guy who’s been a position coach for 20 years is a good hire for HC of an FBS program with ambitions to climb the conference ladder. If we were set on going after a guy with no coordinator or HC experience, I’d at least want him to not be in his 50s. If he’s your friend or something, I’m sorry, but I don’t think he would be a very smart hire.
