Naming rights for new arena

I’m wondering if Miami is considering this option. New Mexico just signed a deal for 17.6 million over 10 years with a local credit union to rename The Pit. The Pit is still in the new name but so is the credit union. This would be a great way to bolster our athletic budget ( or reduce the cost of the facility)

[Credit Union] Money Pit may not be the branding they’d hoped for.

Closer to home, I’d always heard that after he wins the lottery, we will be treated to Mollautt Hall.

Actually the new name is The Pit powered by Nusenda Credit Union. Little awkward for me.

Awkward indeed. That sounds like the credit union is simply paying the lighting and heating/cooling bill.:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

If it’s not Bagel & Deli Arena then what are we even doing?

Whoever pays the most. If a business (likely with an alum as an exec) is willing to pay big money for years, take it. Otherwise name it after the lead donor. I look forward to hopefully buy a brick in the front plaza.

Last time I heard (sheesh almost 20 years ago) corporate naming rights are not a thing. Maybe Miami has stepped out of the cave and changed that policy.

Naming.rights are very common for college basketball arenas.

And I guarantee Miami will sell theirs to help pay for the new arena

Completely agree. When I had some level of involvement, Miami’s policy was to not allow corporate/commercial naming rights. Maybe that has changed.

The university probably has been more cautious about all sorts of naming rights issues since the Tom Petters fiasco. But I agree that the financial model here probably doesn’t work without corporate naming rights in the mix. And it’s not unprecedented; several faculty members in the accounting department occupy endowed chairs named after Big Four firms.

Agreed. And it would be a sign that the university is willing to take the evolutionary step into the 21st century. :squinting_face_with_tongue:

I’m not sure how much corporate interest there is in MAC arena naming rights. I don’t think any other MAC basketball arena is corporate named? And the only football stadium I can think of is InfoCision.

Even the Big Ten is mostly non-corporate named, but obviously there’s a few there (Value City, Jersey Mikes, State Farm)

There is very little upside in naming rights to an arena on Miami’s campus. You can get a larger donation than what a corporation would be open to paying

I attended a game last week at the GameAbove Center in Yipsilnati.

Will we get a blue chip company to sponsor us? Highly doubtful, but new arenas for a number of non-power programs have received deals in the last decade (Tarleron State, Austin Peay, Idaho, James Madison, Robert Morris, UMBC, McNeese). If the admin is willing to lift the restriction, which they should absolutely do, then we probably will have some interest. Whether or not their offer is enough to outweigh a hopeful eight-figure lead donor is up to Sayler.

P & G could afford to do it. After all, they hire a ton of Miami grads each year. John Smale, a former P & G CEO was a Miami grad

I’m guessing $50 Mil would move the Trustees’ needle.
