Miami/Yager booze sales second-to-last

Matt Brown of Extra Points submitted FOIA requests of 45 public schools for pre-October alcohol sales, we came in at a whopping $24K. Was only ahead of Ball State, behind six other MAC programs that provided data. It’s a bit incomplete without a subscription showing sales and revenue per fan but I’m guessing it’s still towards the bottom.

Ohio was up there. Something like 177K in alcohol sales. If I lived in Athens I would be drunk all the time too!

I guess I’m not surprised Wisconsin is first, given Wisconsites in general and how miserable their season has been in particular, but I am kind of shocked that they are lapping the likes of LSU and Tennessee…

Love those Wisconsin Old Fashions - with Brandy and Cherry juice. And don’t forget the Spotted Cow and the college cult beer Point.

Several people have not been in Hawktalk in a while.

maybe they are not attending games as well?

@yanksalex @Spanks004 ???

Could be the process to buy the beer. When I went purchase one at the UNLV game it took forever. 1st - no cash, so had to swipe the card and wait for it to process. Then the cashier was spending time trying to solicit a tip for whatever organization. Long line and taking minutes per person, rather than persons per minute. Inefficient process as one person would get the beer, take the card - but had to scan my ID first. I was only about 10th in line and it took over 15 minutes, with 3 people working. Cash only line for people that just want a beer and move on would go much faster, and end up with a few dollars in the tip jar. I was so annoyed that there was no tip, and no second beer.

Not if I’m working the line. Or anyone else who can can do math in their head with whole numbers under 10, and has ever shuffled a deck of cards. People who favor cash only lines know how to make it go fast because that’s why they jumped in that line.

My employer no longer accepts cash because of the theft risk. I would assume Miami is the same - they were losing more to theft than by people frustrated with waiting in line.

Is that why almost all sales in the US today are non-cash? I’m sure businesses love how “slow” these transactions are when you just tap a card/phone.

Sweden did away with cash - everything is electronic.

I still have some Kroner from an old trip, that if I ever get back, I will have to go to a bank to turn-in for a debit card.

The businesses hate the service fees on the cards, but chalk it up to the cost of doing business for customers who prefer a card. And raise their prices accordingly. Many businesses are offering cash discounts now, generally 3-5%. Skipper’s is 4%. My dry cleaners is 3%. A couple restaurants in Madison, WI when we moved son over the summer: cash only. My Chinese take out restaurant thanks me when I pay cash.

The transaction fees and speed are two separate issues. Yes, businesses don’t like paying fees but they that’s the cost of doing business because consumers love the speed and convenience of it.

You have a different concept of fast than I do when it comes to the speed of the machines trying to process transactions at Yager or Millett. I could make change with various $$ amounts plus$0.47 in coins faster than those machines. Or many other places where the tap doesn’t work, then I need to insert, then type in the PIN (for fraud protection), decide which tip button to hit. I give you cash, round up a few $$ for tip and we’re outta there. I’ll stick to cash as much as possible.

Mainly just need to eliminate cash if you hire employees that can’t figure out how to count money - or have a propensity to steal.

Every entertainment and sports venue and airline have gone no cash. Cash as an option isn’t coming back.

Exactly. Commenter above needs to get in this century.

Was in Madison. Don’t post after getting called out for seeing if anyone wanted to vacation in Colorado, Montana, or Idaho at our rentals. People are too anal and other things are more important

Do we think that alcohol revenue might have a linear relationship to spectators? -Outside the Box Thinker

Interesting article but may be a bit misleading. These are only the schools that responded to this guys FOIA request. 20 of 45 requested. I’m sure we would be above some of the other 25 not listed, but then again, I’m a glass half-full kinda guy.
