Miami v. Wisconsin-Game Week!

Hate is an overused word. The play calling was very unimaginative to say the least. We all understand that our offense is inexperienced and it will take time to jell. At the same time, running the ball up the middle (again and again) against an superior defensive front is not a recipe for success.

This wasn’t Ohio State or Michigan. Sure, Wisconsin has better talent and size than us, but 22 carries for 34 yards (1.5 avg) and throwing 18 times for 83 yards is atrocious. Especially once their QB went down, this game was there for the taking.

I don’t understand why every other MAC team is able to at least move the ball against Big Ten teams but time and time again Miami just appears totally inept.

Chuck’s MAC results speak for themselves but he has shown time and time again that he seems to be happy to just show up and collect the paycheck in these buy games.

Technically I used the word likely, which means probably which I think is accurate. I think we started one Transfer SR lineman so the most likely scenario would be he is not back and the others would be back with a year of experience . So far every Offensive lineman we have lost to the transfer portal has been a Sr with multiple years of starting at Miami. So I would acknowledge that anything is possible but I think what I said is probably what happens.

Check Finn’s throwing motion in this 68-yard TD throw. His entire motion seems so much different now.

Hoping (and praying!) he puts up 2023-like numbers this year.

I’m starting a new site called “RedHawk Idiot Fans”.

As a casual Miami football fan, the games I care about most are the out of conference games against power 4 opponents. I don’t expect to win those games, but I do hope to compete in a way that makes me proud of the Miami football program. In other words, how I felt during the Randy Walker years. The defense and special teams generally meet those expectations. But the offense never comes close. Three straight season openers without a touchdown is simply embarrassing. And that’s with fifth or sixth year quarterbacks. And every year it’s a new excuse. One year it’s a new group of receivers, the next is Brett’s knee, the next it’s an inexperienced offensive line.

The worst part to me is Chuck talks a big game during the off-season about what we need from NIL, about moving conferences and competing for the CFP. But then when he gets his opportunity in a season opener against below average power 4 teams, he doesn’t even try. His gameplan is to hopefully get a few first downs, run clock and punt it away for field position. You mean, we’re actually trying to score points?? In the unlikely universe where Miami is ever competing for the CFP, Chuck Martin won’t be the head coach. He has no ability to elevate us beyond a top-tier MAC team and a meaningless bowl game.

So what do most Miami fans do? After the first game or two of the season, they turn their attention to the NFL and to Ohio State or the major college football program of their choice. They will occasionally check Miami scores and may or may not make time to watch Miami in the MAC championship game or meaningless bowl game. It’s mind-boggling that Chuck still doesn’t have the guts to be aggressive against a B10 opponent, even below average B10 teams.

DEFENSE WAS OUTSTANDING! SOLID A GRADE!!

I will be generous and give the offense an incomplete as we had 11 new starters. I expect to see significant steps forward next week.

Factz

It’s another B10 team so a buck will just be grateful our team is allowed to play them

A perfect tagline for the Chuck Martin era…”Miami football - overall is wasn’t an ass kicking!!”

I knew it! I knew Chuck Martin was lurking on MHT.com, I just didn’t suspect it was Carm_in_San_Diego.

Three questions for you Chuck.

1 - Why continue to run the ball up the middle into the teeth of a stout defense for at best 1 yd gains?

2 - Why the screen name “Carm_in_San_Diego”? Why not something like “Big_Chuck_on_ Campus”?

3 - What was up with you obsessively wanting Bryson Tatum to transfer back to Miami last year? That was kind of weird.

I guan-effin-tee you, If Randy Walker were alive today and coaching Miami against Whisky, he would have gone down swinging….or he might even have won the damn game.

If Miami doesn’t have an OU type offensive performance against Rutgers next weekend, it will be interesting to see the comments from Carm and the other apologists as to why. Like it or not, OU set the MAC benchmark for offense at least against Rutgers this past week. Sincerely, President of the RedHawk Idiot Fans Message Board.

P.S. In the post game presser, Chuck said he was calling the offensive plays. Whether that is true or not, I don’t know. But that is what he said. He called the plays.

Randy Walker never won a MAC championship. His teams best moments came in early season upsets vs power conference ranked teams. Those teams never made it to a bowl game. Chuck has always emphasized and worked towards conference play and has made it to the championship game 3 times in the last 6 years, including the last two seasons, winning 2 championships. He has an established system of building his running game for what will win in MAC play. Max says he is a casual fan who just cares about the early season games vs P4 teams. I am not a casual fan, I go to every game many years, miss 1 or two sometimes. Fighting to win the MAC championship is what it is all about, Chuck has it right, I don’t care that much for the one week big bounce in publicity in September compared to the MAC race and the ultimate payoff of the MACC game in an NFL stadium and then what has become an annual bowl game. I think Coach Martin has it right and I like this much better than what Max and Coach Walker were shooting for. These P4 games are basically to get money to keep our program going and we do win sometimes ( won 2 in the last 3 years). I have noticed that we are much better vs these teams when we play them in week 3 or 4 or 5 after we have some games under our belt. Chuck’s teams keep learning and develop chemistry as the season. Progresses. As a person who spent 20 years coaching ( not football though)that is what I always worked towards and that is what I think is great coaching.

Can’t the team have both? The “one week big bounce in publicity” and a MAC championship? Are they mutually exclusive? Does winning one preclude winning the other? That is the question burning in the minds of my RedHawk Idiot Fans newsletter run by Phil04.

By the way I think what has, shall we say, raised eyebrows of some, isn’t the loss, (I expected that)(I’m not upset by that) but these 3 words: “117 total yards”.

My two cents:

  • D was pretty stout (I say this with the caveat that I think Wisconsin might be hot ass. If they’re having trouble blocking our d-line, what are they going to do in the Big Ten?)
  • Corners held up. They weren’t running by us (again, worth noting, I don’t think Wisconsin’s offense is very good.)
  • Adam Trick made himself some money in the transfer portal after the season
  • Si Walters is a gamer
  • I figured our defense would be good. Solid special teams and defense are givens at this point under Chuck.
  • Not specific to Miami, but are all these mid to low tier Big Ten teams the same? Buffalos lost 23-10 to Minnesota. Western lost to MSU 23-6. We lost 17-0. OU should’ve won. With the exception of Ball State these games were all the same. Outside of the OSU, Penn St., Oregon, Michigan tier, I feel like all these other Big 10 teams are the same team, and not scary at all, but I digress.
  • The offense, Yeesh.
  • Everything does need to be understood in the context of losing 11 starters, but my god.
  • I think the consensus is Chuck took over play calling duties in 2022, someone can correct me if that’s not the case. Our last above average offense was 2021. It’s fair to mention that Gabbert was only available sporadically at times and that had an impact. I think our 2023 offense was on pace to be rock solid before he got hurt. I’m also reminded of how aggressive the play calling was against UC in 2023. It’s a lot of the reason we won the game. It’s also fair to say we’ve been to two consecutive MAC title games with Chuck as our our defacto offensive coordinator.
  • All that being said, those pointing out how unimaginative the offense was have a really good point. We had a hell of a time blocking them and I couldn’t tell, but it looked like we weren’t getting open. Well can we mitigate that with some short throws? Move the pocket? Get guys out in space? Scheme them open? There was none of that.
  • It was honestly very similar to the NW game last year although I think this Wisconsin team is better than that NW team from last year. This is the only thing giving me optimism because eventually the offense did find it’s footing, but it’s worth noting it’s basically every year with this shit where we’re fine on D and special teams to start the season and completely inept on offense.
  • It was frustrating to watch other MAC teams at least muster some offense the past few days.
  • I’ve come to accept this is what it is with Chuck. He’s a good coach, good talent evaluator, who is too stubborn to hire a real offensive coordinator.
  • As far as Chuck’s approach to the non conference games it seemed like he turned the corner in 2023, but who knows. I assume we prepare for all games the same. But that Wisconsin game was winnable. We weren’t that physically outmatched. With even a vaguely competent offense we could’ve pulled it off. And I agree with the above comment that it’s possible to emphasize continuous improvement, MAC play but also trying to steal a couple non conference games as well. It’s silly to think otherwise.
  • I like Chuck. He’s a good coach. The record since ‘21 speaks for itself. We’re probably the most consistent team in the MAC at this point. It just feels like if we got aggressive, hired a offensive coordinator with some fresh ideas, this program could take another step.

Why are power conference wins and MAC championships mutually exclusive? Is there some player development/game planning thing that I don’t know about?

What is especially disappointing is that CM and DS are wasting the opportunity to build on CM’s strong points - recruiting and overall team management. Miami could have one of the best FB programs in the country if CM would not be so stubborn and include an experienced and innovative OC on his staff. Good leaders recognize where they have weaknesses and make necessary adjustments - CM simply has never recognized this weakness. The lack of an innovative offense game plan has been a problem for years under CM. The Wisconsin game was yet another example. Yes we have an inexperienced OL. Yes we were playing against a big talented DL. Good coaching makes adjustments for these factors. Using Finn on roll outs and RPO’s for example one of a number of adjustments. Our game plan v Wisconsin simply was not designed to win the game - our only opportunity was for Wisc to make mistakes esp through turnovers. CM personal coaching legacy and more importantly the entire Miami FB program will never reach their potential unless/until a true experienced OC is hired or a member of the current staff is given the independence to take on this role. Finally Dick you often make good points on this site but winning OCC games v MAC game is not a choice - both objectives could and should be pursed . We have a talented dual threat QB and some other talented players on offense- lets give them a game plan v Rutgers that is designed to win the game on what we do and not hope for mistakes by them- this is a winnable game- lets do it!

Interestingly, of course, Chuck was the offensive coordinator at Notre Dame in 2012, when they went 12-0, only to lose in the National Championship game (later vacated). I assume he called the plays.

Dick I dont think you are being fair to Randy Walker here

the MAC top end with Marshall and Gary Pinkel’s Toledo was way harder than the MAC of the last six years. Marshall at the time was a legitimate top 40 program with many top 25 teams. Toledo was similar

The MAC now really doesnt have a top 75 program

The last time we had a big time program was PJ Flecks WMU and we were non competitive against them

I think Randy Walker could have won some MAC titles in todays era

You are correct that Martins only goal is a MAC title.
