After watching both the OU and Miami games (I made it until Whisky went up 16-0 late in Q 4…assumed the PAT would be good and folded at 11:50 PM), my overall impressions were that OU came to play in their game while Miami did not. Miami’s play calling showed no imagination especially on the run calls. Finn was not as impressive as I had hoped; too many of his passes were lame ducks….In his defense, he was running for his life on too many occasions; hopefully this can be corrected as the O-line jells as a unit. The D and ST were better.
Were I setting an early “line” for next week’s game, I put it at Rutgers favored by 15-17.
We faced one of the biggest and strongest D lines in the country- our game plan - try to run the ball right at the Wisc DL. Result no points and avg 1.5 yds per carry. No mis direction, counters. quick/short pass game plan etc. Where is the RPO game plan to play to Finn’s strenghts? What adjustments did we make at half time? Absolutely no offensive creativity ( as usual ). D overall played well against their 2d team QB although we blew two pick 6’s and continue to give up way to many yards and TOP in playing soft on quick out patterns. Saylor needs to have some balls and talk to CM about the lack of a true OC.
It’s remarkable how Chuck is capable of building a program with an elite G5 defense/special teams, strong team culture, and an offense that’s adequate by the end of the season, yet in the portal era has been utterly incapable of creating a functional Week 1 offense. He’s not a dunce like Treadwell, the D/ST have started out sharp the last three years. I don’t get it.
I guess we’re all beating a dead horse. I’m not hopeful for Rutgers but UNLV looked lousy last week so might be okay by then. Buyer beware for anyone making Labor Day 2026 travel plans to Pitt.
When you have no returning offensive starters and especially an all new offensive line and you begin the schedule with 2 money games vs Big Ten opponents this offensive performance was what I expected. I think this season will progress similar to last season when we were handicapped early because Gabbert simply needed some time to get over his fears and get more mobile . Our offensive line was not opening any holes or getting and push. Wisconsin constantly had a couple of guys in our backfield and Finn seldom had time to get a clear look and set up and throw and there were always a couple of guys there when he tried to run. This was the best defensive team we will face this season and long before our line has jelled. All the complaints on here about play calling. I don’t think there were any calls which were going to work.
I think it reflects the offensive assistants. He needs a better OC it’s been the same story every year. When they played U Miami Gabbert looked lost and it was his 4th or 5th year.
on the flip side if the offense can do a 180 next week. I am confident vs Rutgers their DL looks smaller than Wisconsin. Weaker Defense in general too.
I am not sure if we need better offensive linemen. Of all player groups the one which needs experience and playing time together more than any other group is o- line. It is just going to take time. Next year when we likely have 4 returning starters we will start the season with a much better O- line.
Last year’s OL was probably one of the better OLs of the Chuck Martin era, and they were simply dreadful opening up against Northwestern and they were a veteran unit. That fact gives me some hope for this year’s OL to development into a lean mean blocking machine by MAC play. I know that’s not too reassuring for the rest of the OOC schedule, but it is what it is.
I went back to the prediction post to review and nobody had us getting shut out with 7 first downs and 115 yards. The lowest real prediction score was 9. Offense wasnt what was expected and wasnt acceptable. It is ok for us to have some expectations. That doesnt mean we are bad fans with unrealistic expectations
It might have been the worst offensive game in the Chuck Martin era. Quit justifying it.
We didn’t have any delay of game penalties or unnecessary time outs due to difficulties in getting the play call in from the sideline. Another baby step forward in year 12 of the Chuck Martin era.
Didn’t we have one with the punt team? Still haven’t matched the lowest of low bars when we called a time out because of confusion on the first play of the game against OSU. Don’t even remember what year or what coach. Still trying to block it from my mind.
Yeah, it falls on them. Transfers and graduation aside, we are not the only team with a lot of offensive turnover facing a P4 team the last three years. Our D/ST have shown it’s more than possible for Miami football to start a season well.
If I recall we had a delay of game penalty to start the 2012 opener in Urban Meyer’s first game at OSU (and mine as a freshman). Ironically won the first quarter by something like 3-0 and had a few good drives before the floodgates opened against us.
Hey, you idiot fans, I don’t understand the Chuck Hate. Miami’s D hung tough against a school with boo-koo more cash and recruiting, the offense hasn’t clicked yet and overall it wasn’t an ass kicking.
I like Miami’s chances of running with Rutgers, and winning out.
