Granted it’s not a tourist draw. But what’s the excuse for several hundred local Miami alums not turning out? That’s pathetic! Isn’t it a Wednesday workday for UNT alums who live in that area as well?
You mean Saturday in September or Wed afternoon in December?
How about we get some of those cardboard cut outs from the hockey games in new goggin last year for the Miami section
You said 2,000 fans in the area? What percentage of Miami alums give a damn about our athletics? I would guess less than 10%. That leaves us with 200. Then add in the date and time. Let’s say that cuts the number of possible attendees in half. We are left with 100 local alums attending, and that’s being very generous.
200 Miami fans? My wife and I will be in OH that date. I was hoping for the Orlando bowl on Dec. 17, day before we drive to OH.
Sad that we need to consider doing that simply not to embarrass ourselves!
Actually I said 2,000 alumni, not fans. But your 200 fans may - very sadly - be a fair snapshot of what is largely our current non-existent fan base. As alumni chapter President in Seattle, I hosted two events for Miami’s late September 1984 game at Washington. We had 1,400 at the game and more than 500 attended the pregame brunch at the Sheraton. We needed four buses to get the Miami fans from the hotel over to the Husky Stadium lot. And we weren’t even a good team that season. Going in we knew we had no chance against Washington’s powerful Top 5 team and predictably we got rolled. But our fans came. At the time there were only about 400 Miami alumni in Washington State but they turned out. Miamisns came up from California and Oregon, and even down from BC. AndyStef was there. He can co-sign for me.
That’s the level of Miami support I lived, not this lame ass feeble support we bring to the table today. Sorry, but history did indeed happen. And it didn’t necessarily look like current events.
I said we would be lucky if 10% of that 2,000 care about Miami athletics. That would be 200 fans.
And I said that signals a very sad state of affairs. Maybewe should follow UChicago’s path and drop everything down to the D3 level - more commensurate with the level of alumni snd fan support. They were a recognized athletic brand once, too before their university community ceased to care about sports. And we share the same fight song. We can will Wave the Flag to South Dakota State, as they use it, too, as the heir to both school’s former football glory.
Perhaps a few non conference wins would help out a little.
Frisco Football Classic expert predictions, odds, betting trends for Miami Ohio vs. North Texas
After playing just three games in 2020, Miami (OH) returned for a full season and went 6-6. The RedHawks nearly won the MAC East on the final day of the regular season, but came up short against Kent State. This is the fifth time in six years Miami has finished first or second in its division under Chuck Martin. Miami didn’t shine on either side of the ball, though it did average 36.7 points over its final six games. The RedHawks are slim favorites here. However, it’s worth noting that they were 1-6 on the road and this is essentially a road game, relatively close to North Texas.
If that’s not enough of a reason to bet against Miami, maybe UNT’s momentum will push you to lean with the Mean Green. North Texas was 1-6, due in part to a difficult non-conference schedule. But things were looking bleak in late October. That is, until UNT won its final five games to earn a bowl bid, including a 22-point thumping of an unbeaten UTSA team. The Mean Green are a below average scoring team, except their ground game alone is worth watching. Only Air Force and Army average more rushing yards per game than North Texas.
This game will take place from Toyota Stadium, home of Major League Soccer’s FC Dallas, with TV coverage on ESPN. Coverage begins at 3:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, Dec. 23.

Ouch…not much love there…they must have Chuck’s number.
Even David Sayler finally snuck a comment in about beating an OOC opponent or P5 opponent, during the NLI coverage.
What did he say?
Just that Chuck has built a consistent MAC program, but would like to see Miami take the next step and beat some P5 teams, win a bowl…
From your mouth (or his) to God’s ears!
If we’re so worried about U of Miami or Miami of Ohio, can we at least change the name of this thread?
It would honestly be easier to make it it was Christmas Eve. A few years ago I spent Christmas Eve at a dockside bar in Tampa before the St. Pete’s bowl. That was a great time. But everyone makes plans on the 23rd because nobody wants to be the person that schedules an event on Christmas Eve.
Took my kid out to a very nice tapas restaurant in beautiful downtown St Pete that Christmas Eve. We were amazed so many restaurants were open. Went back to the hotel and had a few drinks with Dave67 and our punter’s parents. Good times! RIP, Dave!
Had even more fun at Mobile - truly a fantastic bowl experience/mini-vacation.
Missing getting a chance to be with this group of incorrigibles this year. Hopefully bowling is going to be an annual occurrence with the kind of classes we just recruited.
Looks like Mean Green SOLD out allotment
