MIAMI HOSTS KENT-MAC TITL ON THE LINE-GAME NOTES AND GAME THREAD

In honor of your 45th year, I have a favor. Here goes:
I would like you to mule a colt 45 malt liquor into the MAC championships. You can keep it in the bag so no can see it but I’ll know since you always get prime seats. When the ladies inevitably win you will be on tv. If I can make it there, I’ll save you the trouble and you’ll just find it by your seat. Cold, unopened, bag still liquor store crisp. True, I could leave a 45 year old scotch, wine or whatever, but it wouldn’t be as clear of a read on camera. When the fans see it all they will think is “that dude has been doing it right 45 big ones.” Even the ushers will nod. 45 years is huge.

I’m sure I can put one in the pouch of my hoodie and get through. Do metal detectors alert to aluminum?

On a more serious note, at all of those home games and many on the road, I sat next to Dick. So this season carries with it some bittersweet moments.

Indeed. He’s getting everything he ever wanted this year. I know how close you two were. It’s gotta be equal parts of fun and bittersweet.

For all those new to the women’s thread could you please let them know just what Dick has meant to the program?

@MotherMiami Dick and I met during the ‘81-‘82 season. The only people in attendance were about 6 students, some parents of players and the two of us. In such an intimate setting we introduced ourselves to each other and became lifelong friends.

In those early years we became friends with Coach Pam Wettig, Coach Susan DeKalb, Coach Linda Wunder and their players and staffs. We stuck out to them because we kept showing up at road games all over the conference, along with Dick’s wife at the time. We knew Maria Fantanarosa as both player and coach.

The program meant more to us than we to them. We were just fans, a rare commodity in the early years of the program. Dick even found high school games of our commits and we would go watch them. He was devoted to all Miami athletics but women’s basketball held a special place in his heart.

I was very impressed with their intensity on defense the entire game! Smart, energetic and aggressive!

Your comment, “The program meant more to us than we to them.” IMHO, you were part of the program to us the players. Made me sad to think you guys didn’t know that and I know I can state for my teammates, we hope you know how your devotion as fans was not taken for granted…..we were more like gob smacked that there were great people outside of our little worlds of families, roomies, campus friends that would support us like you two did. And btw, glad you got to spend this special past wkend with Livi and Grits.
