Golf Anyone? MHT Golf Partner Finder

I did buy a golf cart from Rock Bottom Golf in the Spring but have never used it! I’m not sure I want to walk 18 in warm weather. Maybe 9.

Definitely will carry more fluids (water) next time. Partner brought a banana. I brought peanuts. Banana next time.

Two lessons ago we did focus on chipping and pitching. I think the problem is mental. 80% of the time (not exaggerating), I chip or pitch short. It’s as if I’m afraid I’m going to hit it too hard.

I’ll check it out. I rarely practice with my wedges. Probably not a good idea.

It’s very easy to decelerate. You start to swing and get close to the ball and then boom, swing speed stops. You gotta think one thought: get your shirt buttons over your left knee. If you do that you will keep pushing your chest to the target and not decelerate or get wristy. Best tip I ever got from a buddy of mine who is a scratch.

Here’s the best advice my uncle John Lyons gave me years ago when I was starting up.

“Don’t be chicken!”

Course he did it with an Irish smile and laugh and he’d give me a hard time when I’d come up short.

And for the record, when I come up short on putts and chips today, I still say to myself, “You big chicken.”

Golf-related…

Our son is a first year resident (Sports Pediatrics) at St. Jude/UT Health Science Center. Of course, he’s an avid golfer as well. He got to work the medical tent in the first round of the FedEx St.Jude Championship yesterday. Had time to snap a few photos too!

Rahm, Scottie, and Rory.

Have him ask Rory to send you a few golf balls. One signed, the rest you can use.

Played today at Shaker Run. It was hot. Very hot. Extremely hot.

Shot a 50 and 56. I did not use the Pro V1 balls since when I used them last time, for my game, it didn’t seem to make a difference. I’ll give the remaining three sleeves to our son.

I have been using Wilson Zip and Callaway Supersoft balls and right now, they seem OK. As soon as I get my swing speed up, maybe I’ll use them.

Driving is fairly straight, but distance still sits at about 145-165 yards. I hope to get that up by the end of the year.

Finally…I don’t think I’m very good at reading greens. I typically wear glasses, but not for golf. Maybe that’s a factor.

Broke 100 last week at Jamaica Run (47 and 51 for a 98).

Driving straighter as slice has greatly diminished (Changed grip). But distance still around 150-170.

Had one drive of about 210. It was a line drive and straight as an arrow. Couldn’t duplicate it again though. It’s all about the angle the driver is hitting the ball, and although I know what needs to be done…Well…It doesn’t get done most of the time.

Starting wearing a glove as well. Take wedding ring off although I wonder if that’s necessary.

Bad stuff:

Apparently I may have a mild case of “:trigger finger” in three fingers (two middle fingers on left hand and pinky on right hand). Not really painful but a bit irritating. Saw a specialist and he said I can try mini-splints during the day (I am). But ultimately, simple surgery may be needed. Arrgh.

Finally…I have been using a 9-iron with a putt-swing when just off the green. Crazy. It pops the ball up and I feel more comfortable doing that instead of using the 58-dgree wedge.

Back to Golf Pigeon. I play every day with my ex-roommate at Miami! If you want to play, pm your cell number and I’ll text you. Game takes only a few minutes.

I’m still pissed you beat me in fantasy by a point but breaking 100 is a big deal and I’m proud of you! Only gets easier from here. Work on everything but especially chipping and putting. No hot dogs and beer at the turn if you want to play decent golf either. Save that for after the round or your scores will tank.

Thankfully (for me), Burrow still wasn’t 100%!

Yea…Chipping is such a challenge (and pitching).

I started the wrong tight end. You’re welcome!

My dad was a starter at Jamaica Run for a few years after he retired.

How about that. It’s a fun course. You have to take a lot of back roads to get there.

If I’m on the fringe, I’ll use a putting stroke with a 7 iron.

If I’m in the rough, but close to the hole, I’ll chip with a pitching wedge. If I’m further from the hole, I’ll chip with a sand wedge, opening the face up if I have to try and stop it quickly.

If I can’t practice these shots on the range or putting green, I’ll practice them at home with wiffle or soft balls, visualizing shots.

Would you ever use a 9-iron at or near the fringe?

Dawg, you need to putt that sh#%^*! Texas wedge baby. Learn it. Own it!

After two rounds - not bad. Up from 9th after round one.

Probably not and only because I’m more comfortable with a pitching wedge. I’ll use a 9-iron in the fairway off a tight lie.

Playing 18 at Community Hills Course at 1: pm. Temp will be about $40…But sunny!

Bringing the hand warmers. They really work!

Edit: changed am to pm. Really nothing. So why edit it? Next time I will leave the 1 am. Now get outta here!

As Jack Nicklaus used to say, if you’re just off the green and have a lot of green to work with, get the ball on the ground as quickly as possible and play it like a putt. So I, too, use a lower lofted club (5,6,7,8,9…depending on the length of the shot and how much rough or fringe there is) when I’m just off the green, especially if there’s slope or undulation between me and the hole, and use a putting stroke. I know people who say that you should always use the same club (PW, GW, SW) no matter how far off the green you are, but I’ll take the advice of the Golden Bear any day!
