Recall the term “ Walk on” player?
Now thanks to portal/nil we see “ Walk off”?
Not that I have any eye for talent but Teal was my least favorite film from that class, but Herriman had some real good tape and 15 offers.
Hunter Teal just needs some reps. He’s a little green.
With 10,000 players in the portal, there are only a handful that leave willingly. Freshman giving up a scholarship to go into the Spring portal have typically been cut.
Most kids do not feel that way. Some are very happy with scholarships and opportunities. Those are the kids getting cut loose too.
If that is the case I wonder if the Ncaa could create one group where your scholarship is good for 4 years but you cant transfer and one group of free agents
That would help a lot of kids if that were available. I would think some coaches would like that as well.
As of this school year for D1 athletes, as long as they received a scholarship in the first year at the school, the school cannot reduce or cancel the scholarship for any athletic reason. This has previously been the case for several years at the P5 level.
Obviously, processing kids out still happens, although they have the option to stick around as a normal student if they want.
I’m not too sure that most kids coming to Miami as two or tree stars are seeing themselves as “professionals” and want to be treated as such. Becoming a pro is a distant star in the sky for most of them I would bet. At Miami very few are getting a lot (what ever that is to you) of NIL $$$ and many, and their parents, are happy getting a “just” a scholarship. For the players that are getting “a lot” (relative to their teammates) they know the money can go away if they don’t perform. As a freshman to have the coach come to you and tell you you’re never going to see the field and you need to give up your scholarship is devastating I’m sure.
Would bet that per MooreHawk’s note above, wonder if they even know they can’t yank the scholarship and and aren’t told the rules. For those that do and point it out to the coach, he’s going to paint a very grim picture of their next few years at their school. Special practice scissions and conditioning drills and ugly times, academic stuff–cut a class and we cut you–special group drills at practice etc. Real Meat on the Hoof stuff. So they walk and portal it.
If they give up their scholarship they can continue their education if they can find a way to pay for it. It’s not going to be paid for by the athletic department.
It’s the world we now live in and know I’m “shouting at the clouds” (where’s a good gif when you need it?). Just sayin’.
Is that me shouting at the cloud? Gotta’ own it
Thank you Grumpy.
And now more blue green.
Yeah. I’ve been seeing those NCAA ads touting guaranteed four year scholarships and they didn’t seem to match the “pulling the scholarship” comments. I assume they are guaranteed school $ but the continuing scholarship no longer counts against the athletics limits. Am I right?
Just curious, was anyone on this board in the room with the coach or coaches and the player to hear the scholarships being yanked?
It’s been stated on this board the coaches explain the landscape for future play so the player can make a decision without pulling the scholarship versus just pulling the scholarship.
One would hope players know hourly where they stand as it is another form of motivator to move up or stay at the top.
Well said
Miami adds a DL via the portal. Was a big time prospect coming out of high school. Miami will be his 3rd stop, so hopefully it works out for him here.

The player to be named later in the Lonnie Phelps trade.
That’s a huge pickup and fills a large void with the ends we just graduated!
Michigan State was a dumpster fire his freshman year there due to the Mel Tucker scandal and just not being very talented. With the coaching change most of that 2023 roster left. I was at the MSU beat down by Washington that year - the only game he played in that season. He probably got in late after the Huskies were up 40 something to zip but apparently he contributed to the Spartans’ defensive effort. Our coaching staff has a way of bringing out the best in solid character kids whose dreams have been frustrated.
“There is still plenty of potential that Jobe brings to the table, and if he can tap into that at Miami (OH), then maybe we’ll see him back in the portal again next spring looking to move back up to the power four level.”
Interesting.
