This could be a way out for us.
Sell the teams and sell shares!
This could be a way out for us.
Sell the teams and sell shares!
Well, that’s a kick in the gut!
I posted this in another thread.maybe this is how you stay competitive in your bowl game.
“Washington’s Jedd Fisch has announced that anyone who goes into the portal or announces their intention to go into the portal is welcome to play in their Sun Bowl game.”
The issue is will players sit out not to risk injury
Yet the Red & White club has always been in 4th, 5th, 6th place in the MAC from a fundraising perspective. (At least when I was paying attention to it)
Not sure where it stands now but I think it’s a reasonable bellwether if all these rich alumni are going to give money for athletics.
And while NIL plays a part in these transfers, let’s not ignore these kids think that their “draft stock” will go up by playing at the P4 level….aside from Saunders and Nicholson, I think everyone has been pretty much riding pine.
I knew the MACC would be the last game for Raion and Reggie. No illusions about that. And if Javon Tracy didn’t still have a brother at Miami he might have entered the portal, and still might. Same with Blakey. He may still enter. Others may as well. Who knows. For Raion and Reggie, this was a no brainer as far as if you were going to enter the portal, this was the time to do it. Raion’s stock will never be higher. 2 years in the MAC, 2 years 1st team all MAC. For Reggie, you had a breakout year, and while he has his warts, Gabbert is likely the best QB he will play with at Miami. So you enter the portal and get paid. And maybe increase draft stock (I personally don’t believe in this but they likely think this). For those that say, “if we had more NIL we could keep them” , no we wouldn’t. #1-we will never have the NIL money P5 schools can offer and #2-we aren’t P5, and as I mentioned above, these kids think going P5 increases NFL chances (again, I don’t agree with that thinking). Am I saying Miami shouldn’t have NIL? Of course not. We need to have it, should have it, and it will help us keep and attract certain players. But for players the caliber of Strader and Virgil, except for extenuating circumstances, we likely are always going to lose them. It is today’s reality, it sucks, but it is what it is. And for those that say, “CP you have a defeatist attitude”, no I don’t. I am being realistic and not living in the times of Miami Field and Withrow Court as our home court. We, Miami, in turn, need to keep successfully pulling kids from the portal that can come here and contribute (see Suttle, Mozee, Ugwu as just three examples) and continue to strongly recruit high school kids. I wish Strader and Virgil well. They were excellent players for Miami football.
I wish the rule was only hit the Portal AFTER ALL bowls are played But its not the case Sadly
So, Miami loses a few players to P5 schools, then gains a few players from P5 schools.
Either way, Miami gets an above-average bowl game vs another above-average G5 school in a warm-weather destination in December.
I’m good with that.
Miami needs to get NIL in order. I think it’s heading in the right direction, just need some big donors to help. Sucks bc back to back Championship would have really helped momentum
I wonder if. Virgil would have stayed if Chuck Martin actually cared about developing QBs
I would doubt it. Certainly having a somewhat proven starter in place behind Gabbert might help, but ultimately, he likely was going to portal.
A lot of good WR and QB in the portal today. Like our young options but would great to find a QB with 2 years of eligibility
Looks like he might be a good possession receiver. He seems to only be seeing playing time on special teams at UM.
So at Michigan, you play in one game, on special teams and you earn a letter?!
This sucks for Miami, but can’t blame these guys for taking the money.
This argument that transferring up will hurt their NFL prospects is nonsense. If they are good enough to make the NFL (e.g. Ivan Pace), transferring up could help their draft stock. If they aren’t good enough to make the NFL (e.g. Rashad Amos), they will find that out sooner rather than later when they are riding the bench at a P4 school. A guy like Amos was never going to the NFL, but at least he maximized his compensation while that window was open.
I don’t like the college transfer world we live in, but you can whine about it or do something. Go after good P4 bench players looking for playing time and good FCS starters, we aren’t helpless victims with no agency here.
And that is probably where NIL will help the most.
It is debatable whether Virgil and Strader made the right decision - they will have a much better opportunity to showcase their considerable talent playing next year at Miami than limited playing time elsewhere- play another year at Miami and then enter the NFL draft. Agents and quick NIL money can lead to many bad decisions. I hope they are getting good advice and are aware of the extremely poor decisions made by Amos , Gage and others have made last year. NFL scouts find talent no matter the team -many talented players drafted out of the MAC.
I can’t argue that a somewhat seasoned QB would have kept Virgil at Miami, but it wouldn’t have hurt…
