Finn is no longer on the team

Strangest Miami football coverage ever!

Disagree. Not the same situation. In ā€˜23, Brett got hurt, and the team rallied together. Now, their QB1 up and quit. That’s gotta be demoralizing.

Yes, of course anything is possible, but I could see us not even getting bowl eligibility before us getting to Detroit, let alone winning the MAC.

I really have no idea about the inner workings of NIL.

But, as a retired commercial attorney (read, paper pusher), I’d be dumbfounded if these NIL transactions don’t come with written contracts. In truth, in the world of contracts, they must.

And, if they don’t include performance qualifiers (eg, quitting), I’d be equally further dumbfounded.

Yes, it was atrocious and UB/BSU will both kick our ass if we play the same. But give the team a common enemy and they can rally, though an implosion is just as possible.

Yes, let’s not jump to conclusions.

Finn is obviously a piece of shit. Hopefully getting him out now protects Miami from anything else that comes with the rumors surrounding him. I have no problem upgrading the roster through the portal, but going forward, let’s avoid kids who were in the mix at OSU and Michigan and end up at Baylor. Also, playing Hesson is fine. If our starter next year at Pitt isn’t Carr or a portal guy, we’re fucked.

=>Play the QB who gives Miami the best chance to beat Buffalo and BSU.

Don’t play a QB because he was loyal soldier for 5 years.

Don’t play a QB to give experience for next year.

A MAC title is still on the line THIS YEAR despite all the negative tiebreakers. A bowl game is one win away THIS YEAR. Play to make the MACC and a bowl game. Whichever QB, young or old, the staff believes gives the best chance to achieve opportunities to win these trophies then that is the QB that should start in the final 2 games.

NIL contract are not allowed to have any football related performance requirements

I don’t think Chuck played Hesson because he’s a loyal soldier. Chuck does (or did) think Hesson gave us the best chance to win versus Toeldo.

Then I would have hated to see our worst chance.

ā€œBest chanceā€ or ā€œonly chanceā€?

Surprised it wasn’t more than a touchdown given the terrible performance by Hesson and Martin.

I think this situation places Miami football - particularly the QB issue - at a cultural crossroads. Gus and Brett were unicorns. The odds if recruiting a high school quarterback who is ready to start almost immediately and stays for four years of eligibility is increasingly unlikely in the age of the portal and NIL.

Will we continue to recruit QBs from high schools only to never develop and play them? Will we rent a new starting QB for one year every season?

Or will the pipeline to starting QB be internal - from young recruits we develop and hold onto?

Gabbert didn’t leave before a bowl game when healthy and able to play. He left after have a rod placed in his leg and could not play. Big difference compared to quitter Aveon.

While different, they were both looking for greener pastures. Also, I believe the rod in the leg was the following year, in 2023. He was injured twice during 2022 and only played in 4 games and declared for the portal in November before reconsidering.

From Clutchpoints article:

ā€œWhile it is important to stay healthy ahead of the NFL Draft process, the Toledo and Baylor transfer could have potentially benefited by leading Miami (OH) to a strong finish. He concludes his RedHawks tenure with rather lackluster numbers that include a 58.6 completion percentage, 1,451 passing yards, 13 total touchdowns and six interceptions in eight games.ā€

Maybe just maybe, it ain’t about the draft

We need the late, great Paul Harvey to tell us ā€œthe rest of the story!ā€

Chuck is on record as saying they knew all week that Finn wouldn’t play. Why did they know that? Before NIL he could say it’s an internal matter and it’s being handled internally. Now, with NIL donors being stakeholders in the program, he needs to clarify what happened.

At this point we don’t know what Gotkowski can or can’t do on the field, he’s never gotten real playing time. I believe starting him at QB is worth the risk because we’re just not a functional offense with Henry. And strategically, it would be ideal to going into the offseason knowing if our best QB with eligibility on our roster is good or not.
