And here is the answer. These D3/NAIA bottom feeding schools (there really is little difference between these leagues, its school specific at this level where some schools are legit and others are not) are C-H-E-A-P.
Most of our peer schools use them to pad their home schedule with games for their season ticket holders, especially on dates that are already hard to fill (over break).
Sure, a more competitive D3/NAIA would be ideal, but the price is right. The alternative isn’t playing a competitive team, its probably just having 1 less home game. Is playing another team like Sacred Heart rather than Defiance worth an extra 75k in payout?
DG I missed all your celebratory posts for Miami’s big Arizona Bowl win but here you are again to make meaningless arguments on a meaningless basketball game. I have never seen somebody waste so much time on a sports fan board when they care so little about these sports. Honestly when is the last time you watched a Miami basketball game.
Just looking to give another lecture and ruin the mood
Scrimmages are restricted by the NCAA. You are only allowed to have 2 scrimmages against D1 schools in the preseason. You can’t just do a scrimmage over winter break like that.
And we got what we wanted: An inexpensive home game on the Monday before NYE against a team we had a 99% chance to beat in order to warm up for Saturday’s start of the MAC Season, get everyone on the roster lots of playing time and let the regulars find the range on their shooting…Mission accomplished…
Defiance went 1-23 last year. Their only win came against Miami-Hamilton. They beat Miami-Middletown earlier this season. They had this beat down coming to them.
You can only count 1 FCS win towards bowl eligibility but you can play up to 40% of your games against non-FBS schools (excluding the one FCS game countable as an FBS game).
Basketball you can play up to 4 non-D1 games but only two are countable to your record.
Is this a new rule? Two seasons ago, we played 3 non-D1 teams (Goshen College, Calumet College, and St. Mary’s of the Woods), and they all counted toward our record.
Hmm, I think I was wrong and it’s either a new rule that more than two count or I was misremembering something previously: either that you can only play two if you schedule a scrimmage and exhibition, or that you used to only be able to play two unless you weren’t playing in an MTE perhaps?
Miami shot 71.6% from the field overall, and 62.9% from 3-pt land. Those numbers have to be single game records, or very close to single game records for Miami.
The FG percentage of 71.6% is a new Miami record. The old record was 71.1% (32-45) at Ball State on March 8, 1983.
The 3-pt percentage record still stands at 90.0% (9-10) vs. Indiana on November 28, 1987. The 3-pt percentage of 62.9% vs Defiance isn’t even a top 10 Miami performance.
After about 5 minutes of play I half jokingly said Miami should score on about 80% of their possessions. With that shooting percentage, trips to the free throw line, and 2nd chance offensive rebounds, they may have come close to that, as Miami had very few turnovers.
