Cradle of Coaches

There was a Miami student article on it but didnt he leave Miami for UC when the schools were on more of a level playing field

That is a damn good question.

And took a bunch of our players with him to UC. There was some serious and hateful feelings between the two schools at that time.

Gillman was, at the time, considered a traitor for leaving for UC. Guess he still is by some.

This.

I was aware he left us for UC and that there was some bad blood. But apparently there was a gap year (1948) that is unaccounted for. His last year at Miami was 1947. Did he go to UC as an assistant to Ray Holting in ‘48?

I find it fascinating that he’s mentioned in the first paragraph of our intro to the Cradle page but not actually in the Cradle.

Perhaps there are other reasons he is not in unrelated to UC.

If you have a theory about those unrelated reasons, let’s hear them.

Gillman went to West Point under Red Blaik one year and then to UC.

That’s what I thought I remembered. He didn’t go directly to UC

Who says he isn’t? He has his own chapter in that old Bob Kurz book from 1983.

Maybe people just assume he’s in yet no one ever checks. It happens all the time. I was watching a holiday movie last night where the parents assume all their kids are with them but inadvertently left one home while they went to France!

Certainly those parents faced charges for being so neglectful. No one would ever permit parents putting a child in such a dangerous situation.

That’s about as likely as a house full of people relying on one alarm clock to wake them up when they have a flight to catch.

Look at the list of inductees.i don’t find him on the list.

Sean Payton had 5 staff members on the Saints in 2010 that were from Miami University, too.
Google it.

I hope being Jewish isn’t the reason Sid Gillman is excluded.

I think it’s more that he went to our dreaded rival UC, and ended up taking both players and assistant coaches there IIRC. It’s not like today’s portal and pilllfering players was frowned upon in those days. I think there were a lot of hard feelings towards Sid, at least at that time. He was always a bit of a nomad, though.

I believe Sean Payton is not getting a statue. It is just like the Hall of Fame, an honor that any coach at Miami can get. I could be wrong but there wont be a statue.
